Giants re-sign Whiteside to minor-league contract

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants signed backup catcher Eli Whiteside to a one-year deal Saturday after declining to offer him a contract Monday, avoiding arbitration and making him a free agent.

Whiteside will receive $600,000 if he is on the major league roster and $175,000 if in the minors. He provided key innings for the 2010 World Series champions this past season after reigning NL Rookie of the Year Buster Posey went down with a season-ending leg injury in a May 25 home-plate collision with Florida’s Scott Cousins.

The 32-year-old Whiteside batted .197 with four homers and 17 RBIs in 82 games. It’s unclear where he will fit in considering San Francisco also has capable catchers Chris Stewart and Hector Sanchez on the roster.

Giants general manager Brian Sabean has now retained much of the roster from a team that finished second to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West last season. He is committed to winning with a talented pitching staff again.

The club has agreed to terms with reliever Guillermo Mota on a one-year, $1 million contract to bring him back for a third season, pending a physical.

In late October, San Francisco gave left-handed reliever Javier Lopez an $8.5 million, two-year contract and also picked up the $5 million contract option for fellow lefty reliever Jeremy Affeldt.

On Monday night, the Giants tendered contracts to two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum, fellow starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong and relievers Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla.

San Francisco Giants not worried about Pablo…

Either Pablo Sandoval was fibbing about his weight to Giants manager Bruce Bochy, or the All-Stars touring Taiwan should’ve considered pinstripe uniforms.

Either way, Bochy agreed with Giants fans who watched the exhibitions on TV last week: The Kung Fu Panda looked rounder than he did when the season ended in September.

“He assured me he’s right around where he finished the season, he’ll work out in Arizona and he’ll come in (to camp) even lighter than he came in last spring,” Bochy said. “He said maybe it was the uniform that made him look bigger.”

Sandoval will wear another uniform next month. He asked for and received permission to leave Dec. 10 for Venezuela, where he’ll suit up for his hometown Navegantes de Magallanes and play 10 games.

“I respect and trust that Pablo will come in the same shape he did last year,” Bochy said.

As a precaution, Sandoval did not swing right-handed in Taiwan. But he took some right-handed swings in the cage, and Bochy said the sore left shoulder has “healed up quite well.”

As for Sandoval’s career as an outfielder, it lasted one inning. The fun-loving Panda begged Bochy to let him play left field on a lark.

“He said he always wanted to play outfield so I put him out there,” Bochy said. “And sure enough, the first ball hit was to the wall. It was a close game so I put him at third base the next inning.”

  • The Giants remain undecided at shortstop, although talented defender Brandon Crawford “has done nothing to hurt his chances” in the Arizona Fall League, general manager Brian Sabean said.

Sources said the club is leaning toward giving Crawford the everyday job if it can do enough other things to strengthen their lineup.

  • The Giants have scouted 26-year-old Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes but will not be active in pursuing the highly-regarded center fielder, Sabean said.
  • Gotta run!.

The G-men released their 2012 Cactus League schedule on Friday.

Of the 33 Cactus League games in Arizona, 16 will be played at Scottsdale Stadium.

The Giants have trained in Scottsdale since 1982. They drew 160,574 fans last spring, an average of 10,036 per game. Their overall attendance ranked second in the Cactus League behind Arizona, the team said.

The Giants’ tentative 2012 regular season schedule was released last month. Their season opener is in Arizona on Friday, April 6, and their home opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates is on Friday, April 13.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

San Francisco Giants update: Arizona Diamondbacks…

D’backs push back rookie Collmenter’s start

LOS ANGELES — The Arizona Diamondbacks, who need one victory over the Giants this weekend to clinch the N.L. West, scrambled their rotation for the defending World Series champions.

They pushed back rookie right-hander Josh Collmenter from Friday to Sunday; left-hander Joe Saunders and ace right-hander Ian Kennedy were pushed up to pitch Friday and Saturday, respectively.

The move wasn’t necessarily to align Arizona’s rotation for the postseason, although bumping up Kennedy would make him available for a potential one-game playoff, should the Giants force one.

But the result works to the Giants’ detriment in two respects. For one, they aren’t expected to have Pablo Sandoval in the lineup Friday against Saunders because Sandoval’s strained left shoulder doesn’t allow him to swing from the right side.

For another, the Diamondbacks have Kennedy, their 20-game winner, lined up to face rookie Eric Surkamp. Although the Giants are 4-0 in Surkamp’s starts, the matchup isn’t ideal for a team that must sweep to prolong the division race.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy planned to move Matt Cain in front of Surkamp to pitch Friday on regular rest, thereby lining up the stalwart right-hander to pitch the regular-season finale. Bochy sent both pitchers ahead of the team to Arizona on Thursday so they could get a good night’s sleep.

    Bochy expressed faith in

    Surkamp, citing the rookie’s poise.

“But it doesn’t mean we can’t call an audible,” said Bochy, who could skip Surkamp and move up Tim Lincecum and Ryan Vogelsong to pitch on short rest.

  • Giants players and coaches were heartened to learn that Bryan Stow, the Giants fan who was beaten into a coma March 31 at Dodger Stadium, is speaking and asked to see his kids.

  • What do you guys think about this.
