Interim San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee has firmly locked up the MC Hammer vote. That’s right, the 1990s rapper stars in a campaign video for Lee that was released Tuesday by a group called “San Franciscans for Jobs and Good Government.” The video features San Francisco Giants pitcher Brian Wilson, former 49er Ronnie Lott, Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, and yes, Hammer himself, parodying his 1991 hit “2 Legit 2 Quit.” The lyrics include: “My music hits me so hard, Newsom left and they put him in charge. Thank you, for blessing me and the rest of the city with Mayor Ed Lee.” More popular Yahoo! News stories: • Herman Cain says he’s running for president. | Bumgarner wins third straight | |
Marcio Jose Sanchez / AP San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Brian Wilson celebrates after recording the last out against the Milwaukee Brewers game in San Francisco, Sunday, July 24, 2011. San Francisco won 2-1. (07-24) 15:48 PDT San Francisco (AP) – Madison Bumgarner pitched into the eighth inning and the San Francisco Giants survived another one-run game, beating the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 Sunday. Mike Fontenot and Jeff Keppinger each drove in runs for the Giants, who have won seven of 10 games since the All-Star break. Aubrey Huff had three hits and Brandon Belt added two hits. Ryan Braun homered for the Brewers, who lost for the third time in four games. Prince Fielder and Corey Hart each had two hits. Bumgarner (6-9) won his third straight decision after allowing a run on eight hits over 7 2-3 innings. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter. Sergio Romo got one out and Brian Wilson pitched the ninth for his 31st save in 35 chances. Yovani Gallardo (11-7) lasted seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out five. The Giants improved to 27-13 in one-run games and recorded their major-league leading 29th comeback victory. Braun hit his fourth home run over his last five games to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead with two outs in the first. Bumgarner allowed his first home run in eight starts, and his fifth overall. Bumgarner’s one-out double, which ended his 0-for-15 streak, in the third set up the tying run. He scored on Keppinger’s single. Josh Wilson, sans sunglasses, lost a pop up in the sun that allowed Huff to reach base leading off the fourth. Nate Schierholtz forced him at second but Belt followed with a hit-and-run single. Fontenot followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1. Bumgarner retired 12 of 14 batters at one point. He gave way to Sergio Romo with two outs and a runner on in the eighth. Gallardo, who threw eight shutout innings against the Giants on May 29 in Milwaukee, has not won two in a row since his six-game winning streak ended June 9. He’s 3-5 over his last nine starts. Notes: Bumgarner has walked two or fewer batters in each of his last 19 starts, the longest stretch since Juan Marichal went 21 straight over two seasons, 1970-71. … The Brewers resigned LHP Chase Wright after releasing him 10 days ago. He’s scheduled to start for the Nashville Sounds. … Fielder was 2-for-28 before singling in his first two at bats. … Huff recorded a three-hit game for the first time since June 12. … The Giants’ bullpen has allowed one hit over its last 13 2-3 innings. That’s all for today. Posted in giants-news | Comments Off

| San Francisco Giants respond to Brian Sabean’s inflammatory comments | |
While stopping short of issuing a formal apology, the Giants on Friday pulled back from general manager Brian Sabean’s inflammatory comments regarding Florida Marlins outfielder Scott Cousins, made Thursday on radio station KNBR. The Giants issued a statement regarding Sabean’s comments, saying “they were not meant to vilify Scott Cousins. Brian has been in contact with Florida general manager Larry Beinfest to clarify his comments and to assure him that there is no ill will toward the player. He has also reached out to Cousins directly.” The Giants general manager made a series of caustic remarks about Cousins and the May 25 home-plate collision that ended catcher Buster Posey’s season, summing up his radio interview by saying, “If I never hear from Cousins again, or he doesn’t play another day in the big leagues, I think we’ll all be happy.” Sabean told Comcast SportsNet Bay Area on Friday that he wanted to let the matter die down. The G.M. was unavailable for comment Friday night at AT&T Park, but team president Larry Baer and manager Bruce Bochy addressed Sabean’s radio rant and agreed they were made out of emotional frustration. “Look, there’s nobody more supportive and protective of his players than Brian,” Bochy said. “I’d compare him to like a papa bear. When something happens to your kids, your fangs come out. He’s hurt. He’s hurt for Buster, and he’s hurt for the club, for baseball. It’s a very emotional time, and as we know, Brian’s very emotional.” While the statement didn’t offer an apology to Cousins or the Marlins, Baer said he talked to Florida president David Samson. “I talked to David Samson and said similar things to what Brian said to Beinfest, that this was not meant to be a personal thing toward (Cousins),” he said. “That’s certainly not the organization’s point of view, and I apologized for the way it may have come out. It was not stated properly. I don’t want to say what Brian meant to say, but our focus is on Buster Posey, his state of mind and getting him feeling better, out of pain.” Baer said that Sabean phoned Cousins but didn’t reach him. Sabean left a voice mail, Baer said. Baer added that he and Sabean talked with Joe Torre, Major League Baseball’s executive vice president of baseball operations, on Friday. Baer said he was unaware of any forthcoming sanctions against Sabean or the team. Earlier in the day, Cousins also issued a statement. “I hope and believe that Mr. Sabean’s comments were made in the heat of the moment and are based more on his fondness for Buster Posey than on any animosity towards me,” the statement said. “This situation is still an open wound for many, including myself. As I have stated previously, nobody outside of Buster feels worse about his injury than I do.” Cousins has tried to contact Posey several times but has been unsuccessful. Sabean received a torrent of criticism nationally in the wake of his comments, including from Marlins player Logan Morrison, who lives with Cousins in Miami. “He’s taking this very hard without the comments that Sabean’s made,” Morrison said in a radio interview. “He’s getting death threats from people. This is his hometown, San Francisco. He’s worried about his family and his friends that are there. “And now (Sabean’s) going to make comments like that? It’s ignorant, it’s inappropriate and he has no idea what the hell he’s talking about.” Leave your comments on the news below. Posted in giants-news | Comments Off

| Finding offense will be key for a Giants repeat | |
The Giants won it all in 2010 with plenty of great pitching and just enough offense. GM Brian Sabean will likely need to add a few new bats to repeat that winning formula in 2011. What do you guys think about this. Posted in giants-news | Comments Off
