DENVER — Brian Wilson broke his monthlong silence with reporters Sunday morning. Then he returned to the mound and issued his strongest statement.

“I’m not worried about 2012, and the Giants shouldn’t be worried about 2012 either,” said Wilson, who then provided corroborating evidence while striking out two in a scoreless eighth inning.

The Giants’ blowout victory provided a perfect stage to break in Wilson, who made his first appearance since straining his elbow Aug. 15 at Atlanta. Manager Bruce Bochy said Wilson wouldn’t have inherited a save situation Sunday but would resume the closer role Tuesday at Dodger Stadium.

Wilson had kept his thoughts to himself ever since his elbow flared up and the Giants sent him to Dr. James Andrews for an evaluation. Superheroes don’t discuss their aches and pains.

Finally taking questions, he said he wasn’t concerned he did something serious.

“There was no significant damage,” said Wilson, who had Tommy John surgery to reconstruct his elbow when he blew it out in college. “In the game of baseball, you’ve got a clock. You don’t know when your time’s going to be up, but you don’t worry about it.

“There’s a lot harder stuff to worry about in life than how your arm’s going to hold up in the future. No baseball player should be thinking about that. If it goes, it goes. Play hard until then.” He paused, then added, “Or get a new arm.”

Wilson hit 94 mph and had good

action on his slider and cutter. His inning ended when left fielder Justin Christian spectacularly plunged into the third row of the stands to catch a foul ball.

Wilson looked ready — for the stretch run and beyond.

“He used all his pitches,” Bochy said. “We didn’t want him to throw (all) fastballs. We wanted him to pitch a little bit, and he almost went the other way. He did a nice job.”

– ANDREW BAGGARLY

That’s all for today.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants activated pitcher Barry Zito from the 15-day disabled list before Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Zito, out since Aug. 1 due to a recurring foot and ankle injury, took fielding practice and was cleared to play after manager Bruce Bochy met with vice president of baseball operations Bobby Evans.

The Giants have no immediate plans to return Zito to their starting rotation. Bochy plans on using the left-hander in a variety of roles.

“If we want to give somebody a break starting or if we want to use him in the ‘pen” we can, Bochy said. “He’ll just kind of be a floater for us.”

Zito (3-4) has two years remaining on the $126 million contract he signed with the Giants prior to the 2007 season.

The AL Cy Young winner in 2002, Zito has never won more than 11 games with San Francisco and was left off the postseason roster last year when the Giants won their first World Series championship since 1954.

HOUSTON (AP) – All-Star closer Brian Wilson has been placed on the disabled list by the San Francisco Giants because of inflammation in his right elbow.

The move announced Sunday is retroactive to Tuesday. San Francisco also recalled right-hander Steve Edlefsen from Triple-A Fresno.

Wilson hasn’t pitched since he blew a save on Monday at Atlanta. He began the season on the DL with a left oblique strain.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy says he is hopeful that Wilson will return to the team at the end of time on the 15-day disabled list.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy talked about Brian Wilson like he was a jar of cookies, set on the highest shelf.

“We put him on the DL so we did not have the urge to push him,” Bochy said. “Or to have Willie go out there when he’s not right. He wanted to try to get through it. Long term, it’s the best thing for his career.”

Wilson tried to play catch Friday and Saturday. Both times, he felt discomfort in his inflamed elbow.

“There was no reason to keep going,” head trainer Dave Groeschner said. “We’ll give him the next two or three days to get treatment, he’ll see the doctor and the rest is to be determined.”

Did Wilson fight the decision?

“Yeah, of course,” Groeschner said. “It didn’t come to blows, but … You guys know what we’re up against. We don’t want to put anybody on the DL. But we’ve got to take care of him. It’s not just six weeks. It’s next year, and the year after that.”

Bochy said he remains optimistic that Wilson will be ready when eligible to return Aug. 31. Groeschner also said he fully expects Wilson to pitch again this season, citing the lack of any major structural issues. Officially, Wilson has inflammation and a flexor muscle strain. There are no issues with the flexor tendon, Groeschner said.

“Tuesday we’ll have a more definite timetable,” Groeschner said. “We definitely expect him to come back, but not until we’re sure he’s feeling good. He wants to pitch. That’s awesome. But we’ve got to make

sure he’s feeling good.”

“And you know what? He’s pretty smart. There’s nobody in the clubhouse that wants to be out there more than him.”

As for Wilson’s thoughts? He isn’t sharing them. When he got up from the dominoes table in the clubhouse, I asked him for a minute. He referred me to Groeschner.

Bochy said he could see himself gravitating toward using Jeremy Affeldt in the closer role because he can handle both left-handers and right-handers. But Bochy also wouldn’t shy away from using Affeldt earlier in the game if there’s a matchup or a run of hitters he wants him to face. Affeldt also could be used for two-inning saves or even two-plus, Bochy said.

Everyone is available behind Dan Runzler, and Bochy has an off-day tomorrow so he won’t be afraid to use the entire bullpen if necessary. Edlefsen was lights-out this spring and he is feeling good again after missing six weeks with his own elbow issues.

Beltran finally placed on DL with hand injury ATLANTA -- The Giants couldn't wait any longer on Carlos Beltran.

Beltran finally placed on DL with hand injury

ATLANTA — The Giants couldn’t wait any longer on Carlos Beltran.

With his strained right hand making scant progress, club officials finally placed him on the 15-day disabled list.

Beltran traveled with head trainer Dave Groeschner to Cleveland, where he received another cortisone shot and a second opinion from hand specialist Dr. Thomas Graham.

Beltran is eligible to return when the Giants begin their next homestand on Tuesday. But is that date realistic?

“I think so,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “I didn’t learn anything different other than that he’ll need more time. It takes two to three days for the cortisone to work.”

Beltran has missed the last eight games but the Giants delayed putting him on the DL in the hopes his strained right hand would improve. But with a lack of progress, plus a massively compromised roster, the move became a no-brainer.

The Giants replaced Beltran by activating infielder Miguel Tejada, even though he hadn’t seen live pitching since he strained an abdominal muscle on July 18.

The good folks at Double-A Richmond were disappointed; Tejada was supposed to begin a rehab assignment there Tuesday.

“Desperate times call for desperate measures,” Bochy said. “But you know what? I think he’ll surprise you. He’s been working hard and swinging the bat well in batting practice.”

Tejada

started at third base and singled in four at-bats.

As expected, the Giants placed right-hander Sergio Romo on the disabled list and recalled left-hander Dan Runzler from Triple-A Fresno. R

Romo traveled to San Francisco for more tests; earlier exams showed just inflammation in the back of his elbow, but it’s possible he has a bone spur or loose bodies.

Bochy said he hoped Romo would be well rested and ready on Aug. 25, when he is eligible to return. The manager had a notion to move Guillermo Mota into a short-relief role and use Runzler as his long man, but Jonathan Sanchez’s ankle injury probably changed those plans.

Runzler, who took a red-eye from the West Coast, has been used as a starter at Fresno.

Romo posts reliever's version of a perfect game The Giants didn't pour out of the dugout to mob Sergio Romo Monday night.

Romo posts reliever’s version of a perfect game

The Giants didn’t pour out of the dugout to mob Sergio Romo Monday night. There was no tension or fanfare as he entered the ninth inning with Arizona leading 5-2, inherited a runner at third base and got Justin Upton to ground to shortstop on a 2-2 pitch.

But Romo accomplished something grand as he skipped to the dugout. With that out, he completed the reliever’s version of a perfect game.

Over 12 appearances beginning July 6, Romo had retired 27 consecutive hitters — no hits, walks or base runners of any form — while striking out 13.

Romo was stunned silent when told of his feat, then broke into a nervous laugh.

“I’m just having fun,” said Romo, who made it 28 for 28 when he got the final out of Wednesday’s 8-1 victory. “I’m just trying not to be the reason anything goes negative for us. It’s easy to pitch when you know the team’s got your back.”

Romo is putting up numbers seldom seen since Dennis Eckersley’s heyday. In 36 innings, he has 52 strikeouts and only 4 walks. He allowed a total of one base runner in July.

He has a 1.75 ERA in 51 games, and right-handers are hitting .112 with 46 strikeouts in 89 at-bats.

“It’s understanding what I can and cannot do on the mound and with the baseball,” Romo said. “I don’t try to throw 95 mph because I don’t throw 95 mph. For some reason, I’ve been focused out there.

“I want to be what my

teammates think I am, which is a quality big league pitcher. That’s all I’m trying to do.”

Infielder Bill Hall, who was designated for assignment a week ago, was outrighted to Triple-A Fresno. He had the option to refuse the assignment, but decided to report.

Shortstop Miguel Tejada made a lot of progress with his strained abdominal in the past two days, but manager Bruce Bochy said a minor league rehab assignment was not imminent.

— ANDREW BAGGARLY

That’s all the news for today.

Triple-A outfielder Thomas Neal.

The 36-year-old Cabrera took a flight early Sunday morning from Cleveland to
Cincinnati, arriving about 8:30 a.m., in time for Giants manager Bruce Bochy to
put him in the starting lineup for the series finale against the Reds.

That’s exactly what Cabrera was looking for after losing his starting job to
Cleveland rookie Jason Kipnis(notes).

“I was just watching,” said Cabrera, who hit .244 with four home runs and
38 RBIs in 91 games with the Indians. “I like to play. I was happy they were
trying to trade me because of the situation there, and I’m happy it was the
Giants.”

The Giants are Cabrera’s ninth team. He played Cincinnati last year, helping
the Reds to their first division championship and postseason appearance since
1995. They were the fourth consecutive team and sixth in the last seven years
he’d helped reach the playoffs.

He said San Francisco was one of the teams he talked with before signing
with Cleveland.

“Every time the world champion wants your services, you always have to feel
flattered,” said Cabrera, a 12-year veteran who won the 2004 World Series with
Boston. “Unfortunately, things didn’t work out at that moment.”

Manager Bruce Bochy expects Cabrera to be the Giants’ shortstop for quite a
while. Miguel Tejada(notes) is eligible to come off the disabled list on Thursday, but
Bochy doesn’t expect Tejada to recover from his lower abdominal strain for
several weeks.

“He’s not able to move very much,” Bochy said Sunday morning. “He’s at
least a week away from playing games, and he’s going to have to play games on
his rehab to get ready.”

The Giants optioned rookie shortstop Brandon Crawford(notes) to Triple-A Fresno to
make room on the roster for Cabrera.

Madison Bumgarner allowed eight hits but just one run over 7 2/3 innings as the Giants rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday at AT&T Park.

Bumgarner (6-9) did not walk a batter and struck out eight as the Giants won for the sixth straight time behind their 21-year-old left-hander and took two of three from the NL Central-leading Brewers.

Milwaukee jumped in front 1-0 in the first when Braun slammed a 1-0 pitch from Bumgarner over the center field fence. But that was the last big blow against the 21-year-old left-hander.

The Giants tied the game when Bumgarner doubled to center against Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo (11-7) in the bottom of the third and scored when Jeff Keppinger lined a two-out single to left.

San Francisco took the lead in the next inning on Mike Fontenot’s one-out sacrifice fly, and that’s all the Bumgarner and the Giants’ bullpen needed the rest of the way.

After Corey Hart singled with one out in the eighth, Bumgarner got Josh Wilson on a fly to right with his 93rd pitch of thday, but manager Bruce Bochy called right-hander Sergio Romo to face Braun, who hit a meek comebacker to end the threat. Brian Wilson pitched his second straight 1-2-3 ninth for his 31st save.

It was the 18th straight start for Bumgarner in which he has walked two or fewer batters. The last Giant with a longer streak was Juan Marichal, who had 21 straight over the 1970-71 seasons. Bumgarner has also won

three straight decisions covering his last six starts.

SAN FRANCISCO — Ryan Vogelsong pitched into the seventh inning and combined with two relievers on a seven-hitter, leading the San Francisco Giants to a 5-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. Pablo Sandoval had three hits, including his ninth homer, for NL West-leading San Francisco, which has won eight of 10. Nate Schierholtz added two hits and an RBI, continuing his torrid pace set after manager Bruce Bochy moved him into the cleanup spot last week. Cody Ross’ two-run double in San Francisco’s four-run sixth helped the Giants break it open. Juan Uribe had two singles against his former club but the Dodgers hit into two double plays and were shut out for the 10th time this season while losing their fifth straight against their division rivals.Vogelsong (7-1), coming off his first All-Star appearance, scattered seven hits over 6 2-3 innings, finishing with five strikeouts and a walk while lowering his ERA to 2.02.The journeyman right-hander already had the lowest ERA in the NL but hadn’t logged enough innings to qualify. Four days shy of his 34th birthday, he finally had the top spot, just ahead of Atlanta’s Jair Jurjjens. The Giants gave him plenty of support.Schierholtz had an RBI single in the big sixth inning and is batting .417 (10 for 24) in five games while batting cleanup. San Francisco is 5-0 in those games. Vogelsong retired the first eight batters he faced and didn’t allow a hit until Matt Kemp’s one-out single in the fourth. Juan Rivera followed with a soft dribbler to the right side on a hit-and-run, moving Kemp to third, but Vogelsong got out of it with some nifty defense of his own.James Loney hit a grounder back up the middle which Vogelsong bobbled momentarily before recovering and throwing to shortstop Brandon Crawford, whose relay to first just beat Loney to complete the double play. The Dodgers had two runners on with no outs in the sixth but Kemp grounded into a double play and Vogelsong got Rivera to pop out to shortstop to end the threat. Jeremy Affeldt and Ramon Ramirez finished up after Vogelsong departed.Sandoval connected on Chad Billingsley’s first pitch in the bottom of the fourth. The third baseman also singled and scored in the sixth.Billingsley (8-8) yielded five runs and nine hits in 5 1-3 innings. He had allowed only four runs in his previous four starts but his ERA jumped to 4.07 after his shaky outing against San Francisco.Crawford was in the game after the Giants lost Miguel Tejada to a lower abdominal strain in the third inning. The veteran infielder bobbled Rafael Furcal’s sharp grounder for an error, then slid to the turf.A team trainer and manager Bruce Bochy came out to check on Tejada, and the three walked off the field together.Earlier in the day the Giants were invited to visit President Barack Obama at the White House on Monday in honor of the team’s World Series win last year. The White House said Obama also will recognize the Giants’ efforts to give back to the community. “It’s going to be very special,” Bochy said. “I’m certainly looking forward to it. The guys can spend some time there and get a chance to meet the president, which is always an honor. It’s going to be a thrill for everybody.”

San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy, left, removes pitcher Tim Lincecum from the baseball game against the Cincinnati Reds during the fifth inning Saturday, June 11, 2011, in San Francisco.

Tim Lincecum believes its nothing more than a coincidence that he has looked more like a journeyman than a two-time Cy Young award winner since a 133-pitch masterpiece against Oakland last month.
Lincecum matched his career-worst performance with seven runs allowed in four-plus innings as the San Francisco Giants lost 10-2 to the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday.
“I don’t feel like it’s fatigue, I don’t feel like I’m getting tired,” Lincecum said. “I don’t feel like anything is broken. I just feel like it’s a matter of just getting back to being me.”
Lincecum (5-5) was far from it against Cincinnati, allowing seven earned runs for the first time since his rookie year in 2007. He allowed seven hits and walked four and struck out a career-low one batter.
He struggled with his control all afternoon, throwing 37 balls compared to 36 strikes, and had two wild pitches. He generated only two swings and misses all day — both to Drew Stubbs, who struck to open the game.
That was the high point for Lincecum who allowed an RBI single to Ryan Hanigan in the second inning, the two runs in the third and four runs in the fifth. Lincecum now has a 7.66 ERA in four starts since throwing 133 pitches in a shutout victory against Oakland last month.
“More than anything his fastball command’s off,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “It was an off day for Timmy, I don’t know how else to tell you, especially with his command. That’s a good hitting ballclub and you’re going to pay for it if you’re off. There’s not much else to it, really. He feels good, he’s healthy. He’s just having trouble getting the ball where he wants.”
Mike Leake (6-2) had no such trouble for the Reds. He pitched eight scoreless innings and even chipped in with his bat, starting a pair of rallies with hits off Lincecum in the third and fifth innings.
“I take pride in my hitting,” Leake said. “I don’t like to get out. It’s more fun to get hits than it is to pitch good sometimes. … Anytime I’m squaring balls up, it’s pretty fun.”
Brandon Phillips hit a two-run double and scored twice and Joey Votto knocked the San Francisco ace out with an RBI double in the fifth inning to give the Reds their second win in three games in San Francisco.
Leake allowed four hits — including an infield popup by Eli Whiteside that third baseman Scott Rolen lost for a single — and struck out a career-high eight. He improved to 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA in four starts since a brief stint back in the minors.
“Mainly my head is just back on straight a little bit,” Leake said. “I think I lost it there for a little.”
Leake had a 21.21 ERA in two previous outings against the Giants, including giving up six runs while retiring one batter in a relief outing in his final appearance of the season last August.
Leake doubled to lead off the two-run third inning when the Reds scored on a groundout by Jay Bruce and a wild pitch by Lincecum to make it 3-0.
Leake then singled to start the four-run fifth. Stubbs followed with a walk and both players scored on Phillips double to left field. Votto’s RBI double ended Lincecum’s briefest outing of the season and Rolen added a sacrifice fly to make it 7-0.
“That was a rare outing by Lincecum,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “That’s a two-time Cy Young award winner. He’s one of the best in the business. He wasn’t as sharp today as he usually is.”
The Reds, who went just 2-8 on their last road trip, have matched that total in three games in San Francisco. The pitching has had a big part in that with Johnny Cueto and two relievers combining on a 3-0 shutout Thursday night before Leake’s strong start. Pat Burrell broke up the shutout with a two-run homer in the ninth off Carlos Fisher — his first longball in 96 at-bats.
Cincinnati has gone a season-high four games without a home run, winning two of them.
Notes: Lincecum allowed seven runs, but only three earned runs, on May 16 against Colorado and seven earned runs to Toronto on June 13, 2007. … The Giants signed INF Bill Hall to replace injured 2B Freddy Sanchez. Hall entered the game in the fifth inning and walked in his first plate appearance for San Francisco. … The Reds are the only NL team that Lincecum has not beaten, excluding the Giants. He is 0-1 in three starts against Cincinnati.

Signed last offseason to fill the void created by the departures of Edgar Renteria and Juan Uribe, Miguel Tejada played 27 games at shortstop before moving to third base after Pablo Sandoval’s hand injury.

Tejada was, in a word, awful. He committed six errors, showed poor range and struggled badly at the plate.

He has been materially better defensively since moving to 3B (one error in 31 games) but continued to scuffle at the plate. Until a few days ago, he appeared likelier headed for the waiver wire than a new position in the Giants infield.

This week, however, Tejada’s bat has shown signs of life; he’s accumulated four doubles in two games against the Reds.

If this rejuvenation continues, Tejada offers a better source of offense than Burriss. On the other hand, he has never played 2B as a major leaguer.

With Pablo Sandoval returning Tuesday, Bruce Bochy needs to find a spot for Tejada (as long as he continues to hit). The injury to Sanchez might have created a new option.

Until Wednesday, San Francisco Giants rookie shortstop Brandon Crawford had shown flashes of promise, but not enough (for me) to declare him a demonstrably better long-term option than Emmanuel Burriss. Not any more. In a 3-1 win over the Washington Nationals, Crawford took a step—perhaps "leap" is more apt—forward as the clear choice to take over a critical spot at which the club has badly lacked stability.
Until Wednesday, San Francisco Giants rookie shortstop Brandon Crawford had shown flashes of promise, but not enough (for me) to declare him a demonstrably better long-term option than Emmanuel Burriss.

Not any more.

In a 3-1 win over the Washington Nationals, Crawford took a step—perhaps “leap” is more apt—forward as the clear choice to take over a critical spot at which the club has badly lacked stability.

After the game, manager Bruce Bochy publicly declared that the 24-year old Pleasanton native will stay in the lineup when Pablo Sandoval returns next week to third base.

That will displace veteran Miguel Tejada, the off-season signee who’s been filling in for Sandoval. That, however, is incidental to a larger reality:

The Giants may finally have found a homegrown answer at shortstop, a position manned mostly by stopgap veteran free agents since Rich Aurilia left after the 2003 season.

For a time, Burriss was considered San Francisco’s shortstop of the future. And he has a future in the bigs, whether in San Francisco as a utility middle-infielder or elsewhere.

But, it’s clear: Crawford, not Burriss, is The Man at shortstop for San Francisco. Here are five reasons why.

Not much else going on in the MLB planet today.

The San Francisco Giants had every reason to fall apart as they flew into St. Louis to play one of the hottest teams in baseball.

Still trying to cope with the loss of their captain, as well as two difficult losses in Milwaukee, including a walk-off loss after a suicide squeeze by the Brewers, the Giants were on the brink.

A series loss to the Cardinals, while certainly not the end of the world, could have set a very bad precedent going forward without Buster Posey.

In the crucial third game of the St. Louis series, with the Giants down to their last strike, they were on the verge of falling to 2-4 without Posey, with a difficult road ahead of them.

But the Giants refused to lie down, and showed amazing grit to not only get the job done in St. Louis and reclaim first place in the NL West, but to do it with an offensive outburst that has to be comforting to Bruce Bochy and Giants fans everywhere.

Will this series end up being the most crucial of the season when we look back on 2011?

Time will tell, but its importance at this stage of the Giants’ campaign to repeat as champions can’t be understated.
