Cody Ross, Pat Burrell Not Offered Arbitration…

Read More: Pat Burrell (LF – SFG), Cody Ross (RF – SFG), Carlos Beltran (RF – SFG), San Francisco Giants

The San Francisco Giants have a number of offseason questions to be answered, but took care of a few on Wednesday as the team will not offer arbitration to outfielders Cody Ross or Pat Burrell according to the San Francisco Chronicle’s John Shea.

Ross, 30, batted a meager .240/.325/.405 in 121 games for the Black and Orange last season, and would have earned upwards of $8 million in 2012 if offered arbitration by the Giants. The ‘boss’ still has a lot of ball left in him, and should be picked up quickly by another squad for 2012.

As for Burrell, 35, he acknowledged that his playing career is likely over towards the end of the regular season, batting only .230/.352/.404 in an injury plagued 2011 campaign that he saw time in only 92 games. If he is to retire, Burrell would finish with a .253/.391/.472 carrer line in 11 years in the majors.

Giants decline arbitration offers to Ross, Burrell

SAN FRANCISCO —
The San Francisco Giants have declined to offer salary arbitration to free-agent outfielders Cody Ross and Pat Burrell.

The moves Wednesday mean the Giants will not receive compensation if Ross or Burrell sign with another team.

The Giants still could re-sign Ross, but Burrell has said he will likely retire because his troublesome right foot hasn’t healed. Burrell batted .230 with seven homers and 21 RBIs in 92 games last season.

Ross batted .240 with 14 homers and 52 RBIs last season. He won the NL championship series MVP in 2010 after being acquired off waivers from Florida late in the season.

The Giants also were unable to offer arbitration to outfielder Carlos Beltran under terms of his contract.

Giants’ Burrell Concedes Career May Be Over

San Francisco Giants left fielder Pat Burrell said he may have played his last game. Burrell said he has yet to make a decision but is leaning toward retirement due to a chronic right foot injury. The 35-year-old Burrell appeared in only 92 games with the Giants last season, batting .230 with seven home runs and 21 RBIs. He slammed 18 home runs in 96 games with San Francisco in 2010 to help the Giants win the World Series. The top overall pick in the 1998 draft, Burrell has a .253 lifetime batting average with 292 homers and 976 RBIs.

San Francisco Giants notebook: Team promotes young…

Giants promote young catcher; Burrell on D.L.

SAN DIEGO — The last time the Giants promoted a young, switch-hitting Venezuelan catcher from the minor leagues, it was 2008, and Pablo Sandoval came bounding onto the scene.

Nobody is suggesting that Hector Sanchez will provide a Kung Fu Panda sequel. But his bat is intriguing enough for management to give the 21-year-old a big league look. While placing Pat Burrell on the disabled list with a troublesome right foot Friday, the Giants took occasion to purchase Sanchez’s contract from Triple-A Fresno.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Sanchez was one of the most improved prospects in spring camp. In recent days, Bochy also received positive reports on Sanchez’s defensive progress from Triple-A manager Steve Decker. But Sanchez, who began the season at Single-A San Jose, arrived primarily because of his bat and power potential.

“We’ll use him as a double-switch guy and occasional starter,” said Bochy, indicating Sanchez could play Saturday alongside Barry Zito, whom Sanchez caught in the minors. “He’s done a nice job, and we have a need now.”

Most importantly, “We think the bat could work up here,” Bochy said.

Friday, Sanchez drew a pinch walk while making his major league debut in the ninth inning.

In the minors, Sanchez batted .301 with eight home runs and 46 RBIs in 42 games for San Jose, then hit .305 in 25 games at Fresno. He is

naturally right-handed and has more power from that side but said his left-handed swing is more comfortable.

“This is the dream for all young guys,” Sanchez said.

  • Burrell had a cortisone injection in his strained right foot, which has bothered him ever since he injured it in pregame sprints July 1 at Detroit.
  • Mark DeRosa (torn tendon in left wrist) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to open a 40-man roster space, but it was a procedural move. DeRosa will play rehab games Saturday and Sunday for Single-A San Jose before moving on to Fresno.

“I really don’t know what kind of player I am right now,” DeRosa said. “I’m about to find out.”

San Francisco Giants’ Pat Burrell realistic about time on bench

Burrell making best of his time on bench

Pat Burrell provided one of the more heartwarming stories of the offseason, when his love of being a Giant was so great that he practically signed a blank contract with no guarantee of playing time.

The reality of being glued to the bench is much different, though. Burrell has started just five of the past 14 games. Is he pining to get off the pine?

“It’s been all right. I signed up for it,” he said. “There was no guarantee for me last year, either. And really, there shouldn’t be for anyone on any team. If you play well, you’re going to play. If not, you more than likely won’t.”

Burrell entered Wednesday with a .233 average and 39 strikeouts in 116 at-bats, although his .346 on-base percentage was more respectable. He also was 0 for 6 as a pinch hitter but drew an important walk in the ninth to load the bases and sustain a rally Tuesday night.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Burrell stopped by his office Tuesday afternoon to remind Bochy that he was a .375 hitter against Florida Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco. But that’s as far as Burrell will take his lobbying efforts.

“He’s been one of the best I’ve seen, considering his track record in this league,” Bochy said. “He’s such a great teammate. When he’s not in there, he’s in the dugout pulling for guys and helping them. He’s understanding of our situation, and he stays ready.”

    During last year’s

run to the World Series, Burrell helped to keep the clubhouse from tensing up. He is preaching calm now, even though the club has scored the fewest runs in the National League.

“Last year at this time, I was just getting here,” said Burrell, who was released by the Tampa Bay Rays before signing a minor league deal with the Giants last season. “From everything I hear, it was pretty similar. We’ll find our stride.”

  • Outfielder Darren Ford is probably headed for the disabled list after an MRI exam showed a lateral sprain of his left ankle — a debilitating injury for a pinch-running specialist.

Bochy termed rookie Brandon Belt a “long shot” to replace Ford, saying the club will seek more of a pinch hitter. There is some support to bring back Travis Ishikawa as a backup first baseman and left-handed bat, although outfielder Tyler Graham has 20 stolen bases for Triple-A Fresno. The Giants could free up a 40-man roster spot for either player by placing Mark DeRosa on the 60-day disabled list.
