| Giants extend contracts for Bochy, Sabean | |
Published: Nov. 29, 2011 at 1:40 PM Listen
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 29 (UPI) — Manager Bruce Bochy and General Manager Brian Sabean have agreed to contract extensions with the San Francisco Giants, the team said Tuesday. Financial terms of the deals weren’t released, but the agreements will keep Bochy and Sabean under contract with the Giants through the 2013 season. The team has an option for 2014. “Brian and Bruce are certainly two of the finest professionals at their respective positions in all of baseball,” Giants President Larry Baer said in a statement. “They have effectively built and fostered a winning tradition at all levels of our organization. “I have no doubt that they will achieve continued success for the Giants in the coming years and beyond.” Sabean has been with the Giants since 1996, making him the longest-tenured general manager in baseball. In 2010, San Francisco was voted the Baseball America Organization of the Year. Bochy just completed his fifth season as the Giants’ manager. He is 409-401 in that span and won the World Series in 2010. He previously managed the San Diego Padres for 12 seasons. His overall managerial record is 1,360-1,376.

| Giants vs. Padres, MLB Scores: Giants Battle Back… | |
Read More: Matt Cain (P – SFG), San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres For the second time this series the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres had to go extra frames to decide a winner, and for the second time this series the Giants found a way to get it done. Chris Stewart’s sacrifice in the 11th was the eventual game winner as the Giants topped the Padres by a score of 4-3 at Petco Park. Matt Cain gave up a few early walks, but after that was very solid in his six innings of work. He held the Padres to three runs on three hits along with nine strikeouts before the bullpen took over as Jeremy Afeldt, Sergio Romo and Javier Lopez (W 5-1) kept the Padres offense at bay. Cody Ross started the Giants off right with a sacrifice fly in the second, followed by a Nate Schierholtz RBI single in the sixth. Andres Torres added an RBI single in the seventh that tied the game, followed by Chris Stewart’s sacrifice in the eleventh to take the lead. Brian Wilson got the save, his 28th on the year, but not without some extra excitement after walking the bases loaded. With the win the Giants move to 55-41 on the year. | Stewart’s squeeze leads Giants past Padres 4-3 | |
Lenny Ignelzi / AP San Francisco Giants’ Chris Stewart puts down the squeeze bunt that scored Emmanuel Burriss from third against the San Diego Padres in the 11th inning of the Giants’ 4-3 victory in a baseball game Sunday, July 17, 2011 in San Diego. SAN DIEGO — - Chris Stewart drove in the go-ahead run with a suicide squeeze in the 11th inning, then pounced on a bunt moments later to start a slick double play that helped the San Francisco Giants hold off the San Diego Padres 4-3 on Sunday. Emmanuel Burriss, who entered as a pinch-runner in the ninth, reached on a one-out single off Chad Qualls (4-3) in the 11th. Burriss stole second and continued to third on catcher Kyle Phillips’ throwing error. With the infield in, Qualls pitched out on his first delivery to Stewart, who stayed in the game after pinch-hitting in the ninth. But on a 3-1 count, Stewart laid down a perfect bunt to easily score Burriss. The Giants stole six bases, two by Burriss, to tie a San Francisco record. Javier Lopez (5-1) pitched two innings for the win and Brian Wilson wriggled out of a jam in the 11th for his 28th save in 32 chances. Wilson walked his first two batters and Phillips tried to advance them with a bunt in front of home plate. Stewart quickly popped out of his crouch and fired to third baseman Pablo Sandoval, who relayed to first for a 2-5-4 double play that fired up the Giants’ infield. Logan Forsythe walked before Wilson retired Alberto Gonzalez on a game-ending grounder. San Francisco, which has won seven of its last nine games, took three of four in the series. It was the eighth time the clubs have played each other in the last 11 games. The Padres have lost eight of nine. San Diego’s Orlando Hudson hit a two-run, go-ahead single in the sixth inning to take advantage of a mistake by catcher Eli Whiteside. With one out in the sixth and Everth Cabrera at the plate, Matt Cain threw a pitch in the dirt that Cabrera swung at and missed for strike three. But plate umpire Marvin Hudson ruled that Whiteside didn’t catch the ball. While Cabrera took off for first base, Whiteside held up his glove, indicating he had caught the ball, while he argued with Hudson. By the time Whiteside threw to first, Cabrera beat the throw on what was officially ruled a passed ball. Cameron Maybin followed with a single and the Padres loaded the bases when Ryan Ludwick was hit on the hand by Cain’s fastball. Hudson then singled in two runs to put the Padres ahead 3-2. The Giants tied the game in the seventh when Whiteside reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored on Andres Torres’ single. Cain allowed three runs – one earned – and three hits over six innings. The All-Star right-hander struck out nine and walked two. The Padres scored an unearned run in the first after Will Venable led off with a walk and went to third on a fielding error by second baseman Mike Fontenot on Cabrera’s grounder. Venable scored one out later on Ludwick’s sacrifice fly. San Francisco tied the score at 1 in the second after consecutive singles by Nate Schierholtz and Aubrey Huff to start the inning followed by Cody Ross’ sacrifice fly. Schierholtz had a run-scoring single in the sixth for a 2-1 lead. Padres starter Mat Latos gave up three runs and seven hits in seven innings. NOTES: Cain is 5-1 with a 2.01 ERA in his last nine starts. … Padres SS Jason Bartlett was placed on the paternity leave list. San Diego recalled Cabrera from Triple-A Tucson. … Padres 3B Chase Headley missed his second straight game with a strained right calf. Comment Below!. Posted in giants-news | Comments Off

| Giants vs. Padres, Starting Lineups: News and… | |
Read More: Matt Cain (P – SFG), Eli Whiteside (C – SFG), Miguel Tejada (SS – SFG), Mike Fontenot (SS – SFG), Andres Torres (CF – SFG), Nate Schierholtz (RF – SFG), San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres Well, the San Francisco Giants’ bid to go undefeated in the second half of the season was spoiled Saturday night against the San Diego Padres, but can still secure a series victory this afternoon with Matt Cain on the mound to take on every Giants fan’s favorite Padre, Mat Latos. Cain (8-5 3.06 ERA) is looking to maintain his All-Star form with his first start of the second half, while Latos (5-10 4.04 ERA) has been showing flashes of brilliance, only to be left out in the cold by his Padres’ struggling offense more often than not. As for the lineup right fielder Nate Schierholtz’s eight game hitting streak ending on Saturday, but he will be batting clean up once again for the Black and Orange. Andres Torres and Mike Fontenot return to the top of the batting order, Miguel Tejada will be back at shortstop, and Eli Whiteside will be behind the dish to catch Cain today. Your San Francisco Giants: 1. Andres Torres (S) CF San Diego Padres Lineup: 1. Will Venable RF In other news Giants utility man Mark DeRosa has begun rehab assignment for single A San Jose, going 1-2 with a double, a walk, and a run scored. He’ll play one more with them before he moves over to triple A Fresno on Tuesday. The Giants used an interesting lineup on Saturday once the blow out was all but finished with newly acquired Hector Sanchez behind the plate and catcher Chris Stewart over at first base. Although it’s a lineup I doubt they would use regularly, it’s good to know they can have a bit more depth with Sanchez on the team. And as for another Sanchez, Jonathan Sanchez, he’ll join DeRosa in San Jose Sunday night as he’s scheduled to make his first rehab assignment start. If all goes well he’ll throw again from them on Friday. First pitch is set for 1:05 pm PT this afternoon with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM. What are your opinions.
