Read More: mlb free agents 2011, Carlos Beltran (RF – SFG), San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals

With Albert Pujols departing the St. Louis Cardinals for the San Francisco Giants, the Cardinals needed to replenish the bats this season. So Carlos Beltran became a natural target. He was a free agent with a history of knocking the baseball out of the park, and he was represented by the same agent as Pujols, so the connections became obvious.

The Cardinals eventually agreed on a two-year deal worth $26 million, which is a pretty good deal given the hitting power that Beltran can still produce at 35 years old. Although it’ll be impossible to replace Pujols’s hitting power, Beltran can definitely come in and play at multiple positions and provide another additional bat to make the Cardinals potent.

The Giants on the other hand, are left scratching their heads. They’ve now essentially given up a pretty solid prospect in Zack Wheeler for a few months of Beltran, which resulted in no playoff berth. San Francisco is down to only Pablo Sandoval as a great hitter in their lineup, since no one really knows how well Buster Posey or Freddy Sanchez will recover from injury. It’s puzzling San Francisco didn’t even bother to pursue Beltran, and we’ll see if they rue that decision in the months to come.

To discuss Beltran to the Cardinals, head to Viva El Birdos. To discuss Beltran leaving the Giants, go to McCovey Chronicles.

Not much else going on in the MLB planet today.

The month of May will not be kind to the San Francisco Giants during the 2012 regular season.

The month of May will not be kind to the San Francisco Giants during the 2012 regular season. During those 31 days, the team will play 29 games with only one off-day. Numerous postseason contenders and division rivals are on the slate. The rest of the months in the season are hypothetically not nearly as tough for the team. In any case, the second month of the season is going to prove to be a vital one for the organization. A major slip-up is the last thing the Giants need.

To start things off, the Miami Marlins come to AT&T Park for a three-game set from May 1-3. It remains to be seen whether that team’s offseason signings will make it a contender. It will likely not be a pushover by any means though. From there, the Milwaukee Brewers will roll into town for three games. The Brewers did taste the postseason in 2011, but they could be without Prince Fielder at this point. Knocking around opponents from the other divisions is always good for obvious reasons.

Can the San Francisco Giants do that?

After opening the month with six games at AT&T Park, the Giants will hit the road for six games. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks are the opponents on that road trip. Los Angeles did manage a winning record and were only a handful of games behind San Francisco in the NL West. Of course, that could make the series go either way. All Giants’ fans know that the D-Backs are not a team to take lightly. That club did upgrade its pitching and retained the same potent offense from last season.

Returning home, the San Francisco Giants will play a two-game set against the Colorado Rockies. I would not call this an easy series, but it should be the simplest task for the team during the month. We should see two wins for the Giants here. At that point, the 2011 World Series champs come to town for a two-game series. The St. Louis Cardinals will lack Albert Pujols, but that will not make both games any easier. A three-game set against the Oakland Athletics will wrap up that homestead and should be somewhat easy.

The Giants will then take to the road again on a seven-game road trip. During that time, the team will face the Brewers again for three games and the Marlins for four games. Once again, both clubs should prove to be a challenge. May then ends with three games against the Diamondbacks back at AT&T Park. There could probably be a tougher schedule, but it is not like the Giants need that at all.

How will the team do with such a grueling schedule in May?

In reality, the San Francisco Giants are no pushovers, so cracking a winning record during the month should not be too hard. Going 15-14 would be nice, but it would not be anything too noteworthy. The club absolutely needs to reach that mark for the month at the very least. Without a doubt, anything less would be more than disappointing. This is a club that cannot afford to post any losing months.

Winning 15 games in a month is always nice, but the Giants will need to go above and beyond that against such a tough slate of opponents. The schedule will only give the team one other month with 29 games in it, which will come in August with a much weaker list of opposing teams. With that in mind, posting a record too far south from 15-14 is really going to do harm to the team. That will show that it cannot beat potential postseason teams or even the clubs within its own division.

Fortunately, the San Francisco Giants are backed by a top-notch pitching squad and an average offense. It is not like the team is likely to fail during the first couple months of the season and then just nosedive in the standings. Well, it could happen, but who expects that to be the result? April, May, June, and the rest of the months should be all right for the Giants no matter who the opponents are.

Errick D. Williams is a lifelong fan of the San Francisco Giants who has attended over 200 games at AT&T Park. He lives in San Diego but regularly travels back up to the Bay Area to catch a game with friends and family members.

DENVER — Pablo Sandoval tripled in the sixth inning to complete the first cycle of his career and the San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 8-5 on Thursday night to keep their slim postseason hopes alive.

Ryan Vogelsong pitched effectively into the sixth inning and had two hits, and Brandon Belt homered for San Francisco. The Giants have won five straight and prevented Arizona from moving closer to clinching the NL West. The Diamondbacks lead the Giants by seven games with 12 to play.

Sandoval homered in the first, doubled in the second and singled in the fifth. In the sixth he hit a fly ball to the base of the wall in right-center field and beat the throw to third for the triple to complete the cycle.

The four hits all came against starter Jhoulys Chacin (11-12).

Sandoval is the 25th Giant to hit for the cycle and the first since Fred Lewis accomplished the feat May 13, 2007, also at Coors Field. It is the 10th cycle recorded at Coors Field.

Jordan Pacheco and Chris Iannetta homered for the Rockies.

The Giants built an early lead on Sandoval’s bat and poor fielding by the Rockies.

San Francisco took a 2-0 lead in the first when Carlos Beltran singled with two outs and Sandoval homered into the second deck in right, his 20th.

The Giants used two Colorado errors to extend the lead in the second. Brandon Crawford scored on a throwing error by shortstop Tommy Field. Jeff Keppinger hit a sacrifice fly and Pacheco misplayed Beltran’s grounder at first, allowing Cody Ross to score from second to make it 5-0.

The Rockies got one back in the third when Chacin scored from third on Mark Ellis’ single. Pacheco made it 5-2 when he led off the fourth with his second home run.

San Francisco made it 7-2 in the sixth on an RBI double by Ross, who scored on a double play grounder by Beltran.

Vogelsong (11-7) allowed two runs and four hits, walked four and struck out eight in 5 2-3 innings.

Santiago Casilla pitched the ninth for his fourth save.

Colorado scored three runs in the seventh on Iannetta’s 13th homer and RBI doubles by Chris Nelson and Eric Young Jr.

Belt led off the ninth with his sixth homer to make it 8-5.

Chacin gave up seven runs — four earned — and nine hits, walked four and struck out one in 5 2-3 innings.

Notes: Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki (hip) and 1B Todd Helton (back tightness) missed their second straight game. … Giants closer Brian Wilson (right elbow strain) threw a side session Thursday. … Left-hander Madison Bumgarner will face Colorado rookie right-hander Alex White on Friday in the second game of the four-game series. Bumgarner is 0-3 in five starts against the Rockies while White has never faced the Giants.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants signed backup catcher Eli Whiteside to a one-year deal Saturday after declining to offer him a contract Monday, avoiding arbitration and making him a free agent.

Whiteside will receive $600,000 if he is on the major league roster and $175,000 if in the minors. He provided key innings for the 2010 World Series champions this past season after reigning NL Rookie of the Year Buster Posey went down with a season-ending leg injury in a May 25 home-plate collision with Florida’s Scott Cousins.

The 32-year-old Whiteside batted .197 with four homers and 17 RBIs in 82 games. It’s unclear where he will fit in considering San Francisco also has capable catchers Chris Stewart and Hector Sanchez on the roster.

Giants general manager Brian Sabean has now retained much of the roster from a team that finished second to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West last season. He is committed to winning with a talented pitching staff again.

The club has agreed to terms with reliever Guillermo Mota on a one-year, $1 million contract to bring him back for a third season, pending a physical.

In late October, San Francisco gave left-handed reliever Javier Lopez an $8.5 million, two-year contract and also picked up the $5 million contract option for fellow lefty reliever Jeremy Affeldt.

On Monday night, the Giants tendered contracts to two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum, fellow starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong and relievers Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla.

a team that finished second to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West last
season. He is committed to winning with a talented pitching staff again.

The club has agreed to terms with reliever Guillermo Mota on a $1 million,
one-year contract to bring him back for a third season, pending a physical.

In late October, San Francisco gave left-handed reliever Javier Lopez an
$8.5 million, two-year contract and also picked up the $5 million contract
option for fellow lefty reliever Jeremy Affeldt.

On Monday night, the Giants tendered contracts to two-time NL Cy Young Award
winner Tim Lincecum, fellow starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong and relievers Sergio
Romo and Santiago Casilla.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

On the same day longtime San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds’ received a sentence for 30 days house arrest and other minor charges for obstructing justice during a steroids investigation, Bonds’ former team made a small-scale move to bring back a player from the team’s 25-man roster. After non-tendering him earlier this week, the Giants re-signed catcher Eli Whiteside to a minor-league contract on Friday, Dec. 16.

After the season-ending injury to Buster Posey during the 2011 season, the 32-year old was thrust into a shared starting role with Chris Stewart. With Posey expected to fully return from injury for 2012, the backup catcher position will still be an interesting battle to watch. Unless the team signs another free agent catcher, the three men who are most likely backing up Posey next season are Whiteside, Stewart, and Hector Sanchez.

Signing Whiteside to a minor-league deal just days after not offering him arbitration was a best-case scenario for the team. Even though Whiteside only hit .197 in a career-high 236 plate appearances, the team still does not know who will win the backup catcher spot next season. By having Whiteside sign the minor-league contract, he will either serve as insurance in Triple-A Fresno or win the roster spot in Spring Training, thus earning close to the league minimum of $480,000 instead of the approximately $750,000 paycheck he would earn had he received arbitration from the Giants.

Despite going through his own elbow problems during the season, Whiteside could be a reliable backup for the Giants in 2012. When healthy, Whiteside has proven to be a good game caller and a solid defender behind the plate. That being said, Whiteside, Stewart, and Sanchez will compete for the roster spot.

Stewart had a career-high 162 at bats last season, only hitting .204 with three home runs. However, Stewart’s great defense in regards to throwing base runners out at second base put him into a platoon with Whiteside. Sanchez, at only 21 years of age for his MLB debut, hit .302 with Single-A San Jose and .261 with Triple-A Fresno before being promoted at the end of the season.

While the backup catcher will hopefully not matter too much in 2012, manager Bruce Bochy did announce at the Winter Meetings that Posey would play some time at first base to help him rest his ankle. With this news, the Giants backup catcher will see some starts during the season. All that’s left is to figure out which player will hold that spot during 2012 Spring Training.

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants fan nearly beaten to death on opening day has spoken on camera for the first time since the attack.

In the video clip aired on San Francisco’s NBC affiliate, Dr. Nancy Snyderman of the NBC news magazine show Rock Center introduces herself to Bryan Stow, who is sitting on a bed.

Stow asks Snyderman “How are you?” after she introduces herself. She says she’s doing well, and Stow replies, “That’s good.”

Rock Center released the video to preview its full report on Stow’s recovery at an undisclosed rehab center scheduled to air Monday.

The paramedic and father of two spent months in a medically induced coma after being beaten outside Dodger Stadium last year.

He was moved from the hospital to the rehab center in October as he continues to recover from a traumatic brain injury.

Stow’s family has chronicled his recovery on their blog. Last month, they reported Stow was still showing signs of confusion and frustration as he works to regain his ability to move and speak. They say he does recognize friends and family, whom he joined last month for Thanksgiving.

Louie Sanchez, 29, and Marvin Norwood, 30, were arrested and charged in the attack following a Los Angeles police investigation. Investigators describe the assault as the culmination of a string of confrontations they had with randomly selected Giants fans at the stadium.

Sanchez and Norwood both have pleaded not guilty to mayhem, assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury, and battery with serious bodily injury.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston, who presided over Bonds’ perjury trial earlier this year, has sentenced other athletes convicted of lying during the steroid investigation to probation and home confinement. Distributors of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs have received prison sentences of three to four months.

The judge will decide whether Bonds should be confined to his home, imprisoned for 15 months or placed on probation when he is sentenced Friday for giving evasive testimony to a federal grand jury investigating sports doping.

Bonds, baseball’s home run record holder, was tried for lying to a federal grand jury in 2003 that was investigating a Bay Area laboratory that was selling banned substances to athletes. A jury last April deadlocked on all the charges except one — a federal obstruction-of-justice count.

Authorities first became interested in Bonds in the early 2000s after learning that the Giants superstar had appeared in an advertisement for the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, which was authorities said was selling designer steroids and other drugs to professional athletes.

Bonds was one of 30 athletes summoned before the grand jury that was investigating the lab. Although given immunity in connection with testimony concerning illegal drug use, Bonds insisted that his trainer told him the two steroids he was taking were flaxseed oil and arthritis cream.

Prosecutors presented evidence that Bonds tested positive for a steroid and a fertility drug in a urine sample taken several months before his grand jury evidence. They also gave the jury a surreptitious recording of Greg Anderson, his former trainer, discussing how he injected steroids, in response to a question about Bonds.

Anderson refused to testify in the trial and was jailed for its duration. He has spent nearly two years behind bars, mostly because he would not cooperate with the investigation of Bonds.

Jurors heard three key prosecution witnesses: Steve Hoskins, a childhood friend who was close to Bonds for 10 years until the two had a falling-out in early 2003; Kimberly Bell, Bonds’ girlfriend of nine years; and Kathy Hoskins, Steve’s younger sister, who said she was packing Bonds’ clothes for a road trip when she saw Anderson inject the ballplayer.

Prosecutors also presented four former major-league baseball players who testified that Anderson supplied them with drugs that they said they knew were designed to boost performance and escape detection.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—The San Francisco Giants were working Wednesday to
finalize a $1 million, one-year contract with free agent reliever Guillermo Mota
to bring him back for a third season.

The sides had agreed to terms and were waiting to complete a physical and
final paperwork. Giants general manager Brian Sabean is committed to keeping his
talented pitching staff intact—and not just aces Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain,
who he hopes to lock up in long-term deals.

Mota, a 38-year-old right-hander, has become a reliable option for manager
Bruce Bochy. He went 2-2 with a 3.81 ERA in 52 outings last season for the NL
West runners-up.

Mota’s 80 1-3 innings last season were his third highest in 13 big league
seasons and most since 2004, when he pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the
Marlins.

Mota made one appearance against Texas during the 2010 World Series, when
the Giants wrapped up the franchise’s first championship since moving West in
1958.

With Mota returning, Bochy has much of his bullpen intact. In late October,
San Francisco gave left-handed reliever Javier Lopez an $8.5 million, two-year
contract and also picked up the $5 million contract option for fellow lefty
reliever Jeremy Affeldt.

On Monday night, the Giants tendered contracts to two-time NL Cy Young Award
winner Lincecum, fellow starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong and relievers Sergio
Romo and Santiago Casilla.

As reported by Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, relief pitcher Guillermo Mota has re-signed with the Giants for a one-year, $1 million contract.

San Francisco Giants RP Guillermo Mota
Wikimedia Commons

Mota, a 13-year major league veteran, has been a member of the Giants for the past two seasons. In two years with the team, Mota has put up very respectable numbers as the team’s primary long-reliever. Last season, Mota had a 2-2 record, 3.81 ERA, and 77 strikeouts in 52 games.

Although Mota typically entered the game when a starter left the game early or when the score was already out of hand, he played a crucial role in the Giants’ bullpen. While guys like Brian Wilson, Sergio Romo, Jeremy Affeldt, Santiago Casilla, and Javier Lopez handled the more pressure-packed situations during the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings in close games, Mota was the reliable arm in the bullpen that was responsible for multiple-inning appearances and gave some of the more valuable pitchers in the bullpen rest when needed. In Mota’s 52 appearances last season, he pitched two or more innings in 18 of those games.

The Giants are very fortunate to re-sign Mota at this price. Over the past two seasons, Mota has signed a minor league contract with the club, later making it on the team out of spring training. Seeking a major league contract this season, the 38-year-old certainly deserves it after his contributions with the Giants. This most recent contract with the Giants will keep Mota with the team he has had the most success with since his days serving as a setup man in his first stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2002-2004.

For the Giants, retaining Mota is a small but very helpful move for the cost-conscious ballclub. With so much money already devoted to players on the roster, this move adds an affordable piece to a Giants bullpen that general manager Brian Sabean has already put so much money in. Currently the oldest and most-experienced player on the Giants roster, Mota is one veteran player that the team doesn’t mind re-signing at this low cost.

For the 2012 season, Angel Pagan is set to play in the outfield for the San Francisco Giants. He is not going to provide a huge offensive boost to the team, but he will bring passable defense and decent production to the lineup. Pagan has always been a decent player, and that should not change for this coming season. With that in mind, here are some predictions for his 2012 campaign. How is he going to do?

Pagan will hit less than 10 home runs but drive in at least 60 runs.

This guy is not a home run hitter as he only has 33 of them through 541 games. His career high stands at a whopping 11 home runs that came during the 2010 season. Playing half of his games at AT&T Park is not going to help him smack the ball out of the park. Fortunately, he can drive in a few runs, notching 69 and 56 RBI in 2010 and 2011 respectively. What he lacks in power can be made up for there. He should be able to make it to 60 RBI without too many issues.

He will hit .285 with a .330 on-base percentage.

Pagan sports a .279 career bating average, which is not bad nor is it great either. Therefore, he should barely improve upon that number in 2012 by hitting .285 or so. He does get on base at a decent rate, so I would expect him to manage a .330 OBP, which is close to his career average .331. It would not surprise me too much to see him exceed either figure though. In any case, he should not drop far below these estimates unless a big slump hits.

His speed will be his biggest asset with at least 30 steals to prove it.

In the last two seasons, Pagan has stolen at least 30 bases each year. He does get caught a few times in the process, but that should be expected. The San Francisco Giants now have a little extra speed in the lineup though, so the steals should benefit the team. Without a doubt, Pagan will shine on the basepaths and will amass at least 30 steals but probably a little bit more. The team cannot complain about having him in scoring position.

He will keep his walk and strikeout numbers close together.

Luckily, Pagan does not strike out too much each season and his walks are acceptable. You can expect him to strikeout less than 70 times per season and walk at least 40 to 50 times. I do not see any reason that things will change in 2012. Either way, he knows how to get on base and will not waste his at-bats by striking out too often. I see no problems with any of that.

There is no way he plays in more than 150 games in 2012.

Since debuting in 2006, Pagan has only played in 541 games. You can attribute that to a lack of regular playing time and injuries. To that end, I would not expect him to play more than 150 games this coming season. In fact, it would surprise me if he manages to start 140 games. An injury will come up or a slump will bring him to the bench temporarily. Somehow, he will end up not playing in at least a handful of games. Hopefully, he can manage to eclipse 123 games, the mark he hit last season.

All in all, Angel Pagan should be a decent player for the San Francisco Giants in 2012. He will not make the difference for the team too often though. We might see him come through with a clutch hit or spectacular defensive play occasionally. Otherwise, you can at least expect him to be a decent player all around. If he can break his career norm of being average and excel a bit, then the Giants should consider that a bonus. It probably will not happen though.
