It’s a sad day for the game of baseball as former San Francisco Giant Mateo Rojas “Matty” Alou passed away from an undisclosed ailment Thursday. He was 72.

Matty played for six teams in his 15 year career, which began with the Giants from 1960-65. He was one third of the great trio of Alou brothers, who along with Felipe and Jesus Alou, made MLB history as the only three brothers in baseball history to bat in the same half-inning, as well as the only three brothers to play all three spots in an MLB outfield for the Giants at the same time in 1963.

Matty was a lifetime .307 hitter with 1,777 career hits and 427 RBI. He was a two-time All-Star (’68, ’69), won the 1966 National League batting title with a .342 average while playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates, as well as being a part of the Oakland A’s World Championship team in 1972. He will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest players ever to come out of the Dominican Republic, and one of the greatest Giants to ever have lived.

That’s all the news for today.

If the Rockies were an electronic gadget instead of a baseball team, their label would read something like this: “Some assembly required, AAA batteries included.”

Going with the kids in September is one thing. Doing it while trying to ride out injuries to Todd Helton, Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez has taken things to the extreme at Coors Field.

“Lineup-wise, we’re somewhat patched up,” Rockies manager Jim Tracy said before the game. “We’re more than somewhat. We’re patched up today, there’s no doubt about it.”

The Rockies’ Friday night lineup included seven players who spent all or part of 2011 in the minor leagues. Mark Ellis and Kevin Kouzmanoff, each of whom opened the season with Oakland, were in the Nos.

3 and 4 holes.

Given the presence of red-hot left-hander Madison Bumgarner on the mound, the results were predictable enough: a 9-1 loss to the Giants. On a more positive note, no further injuries were reported, and the crowd of 47,302 got to stick around for postgame fireworks.

But back to the reality of the Rockies’ lost season.

At this point, they have to hope rookie right-hander Alex White’s struggles are more a byproduct of flawed mechanics and lengthy inactivity than an inability to handle the altitude. At any rate, his struggles in Denver have been alarming, witness his altitude-sick 9.72 ERA in three starts, during which he has served up nine home runs in 16 2/3 innings.

“It has nothing to do with any of the injuries,” said White, who was disabled for more than two months with a torn flexor tendon before being acquired in the Ubaldo Jimenez trade. “To be honest with you, it’s the fifth or sixth time we’ve had this conversation, and I’m so sick of it and frustrated with it. It’s time for this not to happen.”

Said Tracy, when asked if he felt part of White’s struggles were attributable to his injury-marred season: “I’m sure it is. As we move forward, I think we’ll see him getting to the point where he’s comfortable with the ebb and flow of the season and the regularity of his work is there.”

As ugly as the final score was, White had his moments. He induced a double-play ball from Carlos Beltran and struck out Pablo Sandoval. But a two-run homer by Brandon Belt on a hanging splitter and a solo shot by Cody Ross put him in a 3-1 hole entering the sixth.

That’s when “it unraveled very quickly,” Tracy said. “That’s how quickly at this level the game can get away. The learning part is to recognize that, at this level, you can’t afford to misfire. When there are hitters at the plate to get to and put innings down, you’ve got to do so.”

White wouldn’t get out of the inning, allowing a two-out walk, a hit batter and three straight hits, including a double by Bumgarner, before Tracy came with the hook. The bottom line on White’s night: 5 2/3 innings, six earned runs.

“We’re pretty much out of it as a team,” White said. “If we weren’t, I wouldn’t be pitching. I’m just getting the innings, getting the work in, trying to get this stuff out of the way before next year, I hope.”

A preview of things to come in the National League West: kid lefties Drew Pomeranz and Eric Surkamp squaring off. Pomeranz (1-0, 0.00 ERA) was brilliant in his major- league debut vs. Cincinnati on Sunday, pitching five shutout inningsand with an arm that isn’t at full strength and after working 10 innings in a span of six weeks. Surkamp made the jump from Double-A, where he was 10-4, 2.02 in 23 starts. He’ll be making his fourth start in the majors. Jim Armstrong, The Denver Post

Upcoming pitching matchups

Tim Lincecum doesn’t often tip his cap to a standing ovation, but something compelled him to gesture as he walked off the mound on a cloudy Sunday afternoon at China Basin.

“I’ve never been one to do that,” Lincecum said. “But you could kind of tell … they were really, really wanting a win, or a lead.”

The Giants did not need a good pitcher, or even a very, very, very, very good one. They needed their ace to be great, and he found a way as the Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 to avoid what would have been a crushing, four-game sweep.

Lincecum provided the stopper performance, holding down the Phillies into the eighth inning. And the Giants, for all their embarrassment of base runners against right-hander Roy Oswalt, sprinkled in just enough hard contact in the clutch to win for the second time in 10 games.

It began with the Giants’ whippetlike whiz on the mound, even though it didn’t come easily. Lincecum, searching for rhythm, pitched out of the stretch with nobody on base. He didn’t have his slider. So he went to his patented fastball-changeup combination, knowing he used that sequence sparingly when he pitched 10 days earlier in Philadelphia. And it worked.

“I think he’s being himself,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “This is a great pitcher who’s won a couple Cy Youngs. That’s what I see.”

When the Giants’ ace won in Philadelphia, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel refused to call Lincecum great. What about

now?

“He pitched good,” Manuel said. “He was as good today as he was in Philly. We ran into a good pitcher.”

Stubborn semantics aside, there’s no disputing the Giants desperately needed to win. For all the talk about being outclassed by the Phillies, the Giants finished their season series a respectable 3-4 against them.

More important, the Giants entered the showdown series as a first-place team and exited it still atop the division — having lost just a half-game off their lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“We’ve got the Diamondbacks at our heels, and we know that,” Lincecum said. “We don’t want to be content to win here or there. We want to use this as a hop to get on a winning streak.”

Bochy said: “The guys needed this. We needed this win. But we’ll have to get this offense going.”

It seemed to go in circles against Oswalt, who was making his first start after coming off the disabled list. At one point in the fifth inning, the Giants had 10 hits and just one run.

Even the National League’s worst offense couldn’t foul up so many opportunities. The Giants’ 0-for-22 streak with runners in scoring position, which dated back four games, finally ended after Pablo Sandoval hit a leadoff double in the fourth. But, comically, it took three hits to score him. Sandoval held on Aubrey Huff’s bloop single. Nate Schierholtz lined a one-out single to load the bases. Finally, Chris Stewart singled in the run.

The Giants kept getting base runners but scored only two more runs on a pair of sacrifice flies — Orlando Cabrera snapped a tie in the fifth, and Jeff Keppinger hit his in the sixth.

More worrisome: The Giants finished the game without Carlos Beltran, their key addition, who departed after feeling a twinge on the top of his right hand while taking a swing in the sixth inning. He had X-rays that were negative but is questionable to play Monday.

Lincecum (10-9) had his own scare in the eighth, when Chase Utley threw his bat at a change-up, and the flying wood struck Lincecum on the right knee. Utley came out to offer an apology, which Lincecum accepted, and he was able to continue.

Huff’s error prolonged the inning, and Javier Lopez was summoned to finish the eighth, which he did while stranding two runners. Then Brian Wilson, who hadn’t scooped up a save situation in 10 days, protected the lead in the ninth.

“I don’t work on commission,” Wilson said.

Lincecum’s victory was his first in August since 2009. He was 0-5 in the month last season, a personal trial that he came through with newfound dedication, mental toughness and physical fitness.

“Obviously there’s the factor of being in shape and letting your body allow you to do your thing,” he said, asked the year-over-year difference. “It’s finding your rhythm and trusting your stuff. Lately, I’ve been feeling really good out there.”

The Giants hope to keep that feeling going against the Pittsburgh Pirates, who enter with a 10-game losing streak.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Cole Hamels pitched a complete game gem to carry the Philadelphia Phillies to a 2-1 victory over the slumping San Francisco Giants on Saturday for their ninth straight win.

Hamels scattered seven hits against the World Series champions while striking out five, and twice pitched himself out of danger for his 13th victory of the season for the National League East leaders.

“We had more hits than they did, we just couldn’t get the big hit,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters after their eighth loss in nine games.

“You don’t win the World Series unless you can beat good pitching. Right now we’re not doing that.”

Philadelphia (74-39) scored two runs in the first inning, one unearned, against San Francisco starter Matt Cain, who then settled himself to complete eight solid innings.

“We got to him early but after that he was tough,” said Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard.

“He (Cain) got into some situations where it could have gone bad, and Cole got into some situations where it could have gone bad, but they got out of them.”

Cain allowed just two base runners after the first inning and at one point retired 11 consecutive batters.

But for all Cain’s good work, the Giants (62-52) again struggled to get runs on the board.

In the fourth inning, San Francisco had a runner at second base with nobody out but Hamels managed to wriggle his way out of trouble in four pitches after striking out Carlos Beltran in three and forcing Pablo Sandoval to hit into a double play.

The Giants again had a runner at second base in the eighth but Aaron Rowand popped out to second baseman Chase Utley to end the inning.

But just as Hamels was on the verge of a shutout, Sandoval hit a solo home run at the bottom of the ninth for the Giants.

“I was just a little frustrated,” Hamels said of missing out on the shutout.

The fact that a trio of lefthanded hitters – Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez – did the majority of damage off the lefty Zito probably did little to change manager Charlie Manuel’s trade-deadline wish list, which starts with a righthanded bat he can insert into the middle of his batting order on those nights when the Phillies face a really tough lefty.

Zito, despite owning a Cy Young Award, no longer qualifies for that distinction, although his $18.5 million salary does make him the most overpaid pitcher in baseball.

John Mayberry, inserted into the starting lineup in place of Domonic Brown after Zito replaced Lincecum, continued to make his case for being the righthanded bat that Manuel wants by hitting a fourth-inning home run and a seventh-inning double. He has 14 RBIs this month. He had 26 RBIs for his career coming into the month.

Mayberry, of course, would be the cheapest option and you could make a case that he would also be the best one.

Perhaps more than anything, the Giants’ return to Citizens Bank Park for the first time since they held a champagne celebration in the visiting clubhouse last October offered a reminder that the blockbuster deals at the trade deadline are not always the ones that make a difference.

A year ago around this time, the Giants were in second place in the National League West, well within striking distance of the San Diego Padres. The rumor mill had them in pursuit of Toronto’s Juan Bautista and Washington’s Adam Dunn. They got neither.

What do you guys think about this.

Cody Ross can't wait to get to Citizens Bank Park, despite knowing that a firestorm of foul epithets surely awaits him in the City of Brotherly Love.

Cody Ross can’t wait to get to Citizens Bank Park, despite knowing that a firestorm of foul epithets surely awaits him in the City of Brotherly Love.

“I definitely won’t be leaving my hotel room much, that’s for sure,” Ross said. “I’ll be getting a lot of room service.”

On Tuesday, Ross will make his first Philadelphia appearance since October, when he spearheaded the Giants’ six-game triumph over the two-time National League champions and won NLCS MVP honors. For the series, Ross hit .350 with three doubles and three homers — two coming against Phillies ace Roy Halladay in the opener at Citizens Bank.

Phillies fans don’t like the Giants but have a particularly bitter distaste for Ross. Midway through his NLCS rampage, a Facebook page titled “I Hate Cody Ross” sprouted. It picked up 1,000 followers in 24 hours.

“Somebody showed it to me during the offseason,” he said. “No question, there were some pretty bad things said on there.”

Most are unprintable, but there were a few clever barbs, like “I had a hernia once. I liked that more than Cody Ross.” And: “So apparently Cody Ross’ nickname is ‘Smiles.’ I hate him even more.”

Ross hasn’t smiled much in 2011, but he cracks a wide one at the thought of going into Philly right now. The boo-fest that awaits notwithstanding, the .258 hitter is hoping it will cure whatever ails him at the plate.

“Every year it seems I’ll have one or two stretches where I get hot and it’ll

catapult me into a tear, but it just hasn’t happened this year,” he said. “I was bit by the injury bug at the beginning of the year, then I had to sit out a few games with my hamstring. I just can’t seem to get it going and keep it going.”

Ross has totaled seven homers and 30 RBIs with 66 strikeouts. The one saving grace is his team-leading 33 walks, but his production has been nowhere near what he had expected after becoming a San Francisco folk hero last fall. He also knows he could be running out of time, as the Giants look around the league for a hitter who can give them the same kind of offensive jolt Ross did in 2010.

“He showed last year that when he gets hot he can carry a ballclub,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “There have been some flashes, but like a lot of our guys, he just hasn’t been able to get untracked yet. We could use one of those hot streaks right now.”

Ross’ own biggest disappointment?

“Just driving in runs,” he said. “I’ve always felt I’ve been able to be a run producer — not so much a home run hitter, but somebody who can drive in runs. It just seems like this year it’s been a real struggle to do it. I don’t know if I put too much pressure on myself or what.

“I think when the team is struggling offensively, everybody puts way more pressure on themselves, especially when the media is always writing about those struggles,” he continued. “We hear all that stuff and we try to block out as much as we can. But we’re human, and we try to do superhuman things sometimes instead of just going up there and being ourselves and playing our game.”

Now Ross is hoping to re-create the feeling he had last fall at Citizens Bank to reclaim his batting stroke, even if it also breeds contempt from Phillies fans. He’s had success against Philadelphia historically. Including the postseason, he has 16 career homers against the Phillies, more than against any other club. He’s also looking forward to trips to Atlanta and Florida for the same reason.

“I’m going back into the N.L. East, where I played most of my career,” the former Marlin said. “I think one of the main reasons I played so well in the postseason is I felt comfortable going into Philly and Atlanta. I didn’t swing it all that well in the World Series, and one of the reasons is I’d never played in Texas. When you go into a stadium and you haven’t played there much, it’s a weird sort of vibe.”

For the favorable hitting conditions in Philadelphia, he’ll happily put up with a torrent of insults.

“I’m excited,” he said. “Every time I’ve ever gone into Philly, it’s been fun. It’s a lot like our place (AT&T Park) — the fans are so passionate, they love the game and they’re so into every pitch. It’s definitely going to be a little different this year. I’m sure I’m going to be welcomed the Philly way, but nonetheless, it could be just what I need.”

TUESDAY’S GAME
Giants (Tim Lincecum 8-8) at Philadelphia (Vance Worley 6-1), 4:05 p.m. CSNBA

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

With Pablo Sandoval and Nate Schierholtz leading the way, the heart of the Giants' batting order is finally starting to show some vibrant thump.

With Pablo Sandoval and Nate Schierholtz leading the way, the heart of the Giants’ batting order is finally starting to show some vibrant thump.

Sandoval went 3 for 4, including a monster homer to break a scoreless tie in the fourth inning, and Schierholtz was 2 for 4 with the first run-scoring hit in a four-run sixth as the Giants whipped the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-0 at AT&T Park on Monday night.

“You’ve having fun when you’re swinging the bat well,” said Sandoval after a brilliant night in the field and at the plate. “If we keep doing like that, we’re going to have fun every day.”

Ryan Vogelsong (7-1) was the benefactor of San Francisco’s rare night of robust offensive fun, even if he didn’t need so much. In making his first post-All-Star start, the Giants rotation’s Lazarus picked up where he left off from his stellar first half. The right-hander tossed 62/3 shutout innings, limited the Dodgers to seven hits and solidified his position as the National League’s ERA leader at 2.02.

Vogelsong’s continued excellence is no longer so surprising, but the possible revival of the Giants’ offense may be. They’ve scored four or more runs in five of their past six games, and that’s a positive sign for a team that is 35-6 when it puts at least four runs on the board.

“We’re not going to score 10 runs a game, but we should be able to score five,” Sandoval said. “That’s important, because we have a great pitching staff and we

shouldn’t have so many one- and two-run games. If we can get a couple guys going, we can do some damage.”

At least of late, Sandoval and Schierholtz have been giving the Giants some respectable anchors in the middle of their order, and their five hits played a huge part in beating a former nemesis, Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley (8-8). Sandoval has had a rough time with Billingsley historically (6 for 33, .182 lifetime with no homers coming into Monday night), but he was no mystery to him on this night.

Change of approach, perhaps? No, Sandoval maintained.

“See ball, hit ball, that’s what I’ve been doing these last couple games,” he said. “I don’t worry about approach.”

Sandoval definitely saw the pitch Billingsley offered up to open the bottom of the fourth. He launched his ninth homer into the pavilion in right-center, one of the deepest parts of the ballpark.

As good as Sandoval has been at the plate, he was just as good at third base in this game, making several nice stops: notably a backhand pick of a Matt Kemp stinging grounder in the sixth with runners at first and second and nobody out. Sandoval not only snared the ball, he made a strong throw to second baseman Mike Fontenot, who turned a double play.

“Sandoval, since he’s been back (from hand surgery), has just played a terrific third base,” said manager Bruce Bochy. “Range, coming in on the ball, he’s throwing the ball well. I just love the way he’s playing defensively.”

As for Vogelsong, he made his first second-half statement that he was a worthy All-Star pick. While he could care less about his league-leading ERA, if it validates Bochy’s faith in picking him for the N.L. team, he’ll be happy to take the numbers as low as he possibly can.

“It’s important for me to prove him right,” Vogelsong said. “(Critics) can say whatever they want to say, it doesn’t bother me one bit. But he stuck his neck out to pick me, so I want to show people he made a good decision.”

Vogelsong had some control issues in his previous three starts but studied film during the break and noticed a flaw in his mechanics that helped him get back to form. He walked just one against the Dodgers while striking out five.

Infielder Miguel Tejada left the game after suffering a lower-abdominal strain while making a fielding play in the third inning. Catcher Chris Stewart left in the sixth after getting hit in the back of the head by Aaron Miles’ bat.

Lincecum (8-7), the defending National League Cy Young Award winner, won his second in a row after grabbing just one victory in his previous eight starts.

Forget about calling it the bullpen. Giants relievers hang out at the K Corral.

They combined for 13 strikeouts over eight scoreless innings and kept the San Diego Padres at bay long enough to pull out a 6-5, 14-inning victory at AT&T Park on Wednesday.

Nate Schierholtz won it with his second home run of the game, a high fly ball that barely reached the top of the brick wall in right field leading off the bottom of the 14th. Padres reliever Pat Neshek walked off the mound shaking his head in disbelief.

It was the Giants’ 10th walk-off victory this season and the first career multi-homer game for Schierholtz.

He got the hero’s welcome, with players mobbing him at home plate. But it was the Giants relievers who cleared his path.

“They won the game for us,” manager Bruce Bochy said after the 3-hour, 52-minute epic. “They gave us a chance when we were down, and then they held it there.”

The Giants improved to 8-5 in extra innings. Despite their season-long offensive woes, they moved to two games ahead of Arizona in the National League West.

San Diego, meanwhile, mounted nothing but a steady breeze against the Giants bullpen. Brian Wilson and Sergio Romo, for example, combined to strike out seven of the 14 batters they faced.

In all, the Giants tied the ballpark record for K’s. That’s 19 strikeouts — and one walk-off.

“That home run could not have come at a better time,” Bochy said. “That was a hard-fought

game.”

It was the last of several well-timed hits for the Giants. They tied it at 5-5 in the eighth when their hottest hitter came up at the right time. Pablo Sandoval blasted a two-run double, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 17 games.

Hitting left-handed against right-handed reliever Mike Adams, Sandoval smoked a ball deep into the right-center alley to drive home Andres Torres from third and Brandon Crawford from first.

As Sandoval pulled into second base, he spread out his arms wide, like an eagle, then clapped his hands in triumph.

Sandoval deserved credit for a save in the top of the ninth when the Padres threatened against Wilson. San Diego had runners at the corners and one out. Wilson took care of Chase Headley on his own, getting a fastball for a swinging strike three, but Ryan Ludwick lashed a ball down the third-base line.

Sandoval dived to his right to snare Ludwick’s hot shot, then threw across the diamond for the final out of the inning.

The late flurry of action, predictably, took place too late to do any good for Madison Bumgarner. The Giants made it an astounding 18th consecutive game at AT&T Park without scoring more than three runs with Bumgarner on the mound.

Bumgarner gave up five runs in six innings — but he knew he had to be better. This was a matchup between a pair of starters with the National League’s worst run support. Dustin Moseley was getting 2.21 runs per nine innings from the Padres while in games; Bumgarner was getting 2.74.

But it would be untrue to say Bumgarner got no support Wednesday. Andres Torres helped him with a sensational play to rob Jesus Guzman of extra bases in the top of the sixth. Guzman blasted a ball toward the 399-foot mark in center field. Torres sprinted with his back to the plate, turned to find the ball slicing behind him and caught it with an outstretched glove.

Torres also finished 3 for 6 with two doubles and two runs. His big game came a night after being irritated by Padres reliever Chad Qualls, who spiked the ball after tagging him out.

“I’ve said it before: Sometimes it’s good to play angry,” Bochy said. “Sometimes that’s a good thing. He felt like (last night) was personal. What was important is that he handled it.”

Symbolically, Tim Lincecum walked to the mound against Cincinnati on Saturday as the Giants’ last line of defense against the forces of panic and despair.

It’s not quite fair to pile all that responsibility upon anybody’s shoulders in any single game in June, but there it was.

Freddy Sanchez had just gone down to a serious shoulder injury. Buster Posey has been down and out for a few weeks, of course.

The season is still young, and the Giants are still clinging to first place in the National League West.

But if the Giants were going to have a chance to feel halfway good about themselves this weekend, Lincecum was the one who had to start the party music.

And it did not happen.

Instead, after the Reds’ 10-2 victory at AT&T Park, there was mostly thick silence in the Giants’ clubhouse.

“It’s not about carrying the team, it’s just being a large aspect of it, and doing your job,” Lincecum said after giving up seven earned runs in four-plus innings, one of the worst outings of his glorious career.

“And I didn’t do mine today.”

What happens to the defending World Series champions if they can’t hit, if they don’t have Posey, and if Lincecum isn’t on top of his game?

We saw it Saturday — the sense of anxiety was a tangible presence amid the murmuring and the head-scratching in the stands.

Lincecum has done so much for this franchise, when he doesn’t deliver, the air gets mighty arid.

“I

know it looked bad today,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “We were off. Had a horrible game. This doesn’t happen very often. It just so happens it comes right after Freddy’s injury. These guys don’t make excuses.

“These guys, they’re not making excuses. “… It’s up to us to keep fighting. And these guys will.”

Usually, the charge starts with Lincecum, of course.

But this was the fourth consecutive — and easily the worst — sluggish outing for the two-time Cy Young winner, all dating to May 21, when Lincecum shut out the A’s.

In that game, Lincecum threw a season-high 133 pitches; that also was his last start before the Giants lost Posey, Lincecum’s trusted catcher, to a devastating ankle injury in late May.

In his four starts since, Lincecum has a 7.66 ERA, and his season ERA has gone from 2.06 to his current 3.41.

Lincecum had a similarly wobbly period last August, when he acknowledged some adjustment issues going from Bengie Molina to Posey behind the plate.

By last September, though, Lincecum was in lock step with Posey and was nearly perfect through the fall.

Right now, Lincecum is about as far from his September-October dominance as he can get.

“I still feel strong,” Lincecum said. “I don’t feel unhealthy. I don’t feel like anything’s bothering me. It’s just simply getting back to being me. Just driving to the plate, using the mechanics, keeping my rhythm.

“Kind of dumbifying myself, I guess you could say “… keeping it simple.”

Lincecum was all over the place from the outset, and the Reds were disciplined enough to make him pay; he threw 73 total pitches, only 36 for strikes.

He recorded only one strikeout, which, remarkably, is the lowest total of his career. In 136 previous outings (135 as a starter) — Lincecum had never recorded fewer than two strikeouts and had averaged 7.4 strikeouts per appearance.

That 133-pitch outing, in retrospect, sticks out like a sore statistical thumb.

“I don’t feel like it’s fatigue,” Lincecum said when asked about the effects of the May 21 game. “I don’t feel like I’m getting tired. I don’t feel like anything’s broken. I just feel like it’s a matter of just getting back to being me.”

That, perhaps, could suggest Lincecum has been thinking a little more on the mound now that he’s throwing to Eli Whiteside, not Posey.

In the third inning, there might have been a sign of some disconnect — with a runner on third, Lincecum threw a darting off-speed pitch that hit the dirt but looked stoppable.

Whiteside missed the ball, it skipped to the backstop, Brandon Phillips scored, putting the Reds up 3-0 and putting a scowl on Lincecum’s face.

Has the catcher change affected Lincecum at all?

“Not really,” Lincecum said. “Not at all. I mean, when you go out there, whether it’s with Whitey or (Chris) Stewart, you have to go out there and make pitches.”

Bochy said he continues to have the utmost confidence in Whiteside but added that he might get Stewart in there with Lincecum if the schedule works out right.

You count up all of the Giants’ woes, and you do have to ask: How much has to go wrong for them to be knocked out of first place?

At some point, it probably will come down to Lincecum, the Giants’ other key pitchers, and the refortifying of their last line of defense.

The Giants may not have had the best defense range-wise in 2010, but they were able to make the plays on everything they got to.

The Giants defense is subpar in 2011, but most of their errors came early on. The Giants are currently 13th-worst in the National League in errors with 40 and 12th in the league in fielding percentage at .983.

According to Baseball-Reference, as a team, San Francisco’s Rtot (the number of runs above or below average the player was worth based on the number of plays made) is minus-three, so their defense has slightly cost them a few runs.

One glaring defensive question mark is Miguel Tejada. As a shortstop this season, Tejada has made six errors and has a .942 fielding percentage in 27 games—with an Rtot of minus-three.

The Giants have made the most of Tejada by placing him at third base while Pablo Sandoval is recovering from his injury. Tejada has responded nicely by making just one error in 27 games, with an Rtot of four and a .988 fielding percentage.

If the Giants want to repeat as champions in 2011, they will have to continue doing something they excelled at last season—catching the ball.

On April 28, 2011, a 33 year-old righty who hadn’t started a major league game in seven years took the mound at PNC Park in Pittsburgh to face his former club, the Pirates, in his debut with the club that first drafted him nine years earlier, the San Francisco Giants.

Ryan Vogelsong, the journeyman who, in order to keep his professional baseball career alive, found himself playing for the Hanshin Tigers of Japan from 2007 to 2008, had come full circle.

Drafted by San Francisco in the 5th round of the amateur draft in 1998, Vogelsong made his big league debut on September 2, 2000. He would only appear in four games that year, and was traded to the Pirates in mid-2001 in the deal that brought Jason Schmidt to San Francisco.

Vogelsong struggled with Pittsburgh for five seasons, going 10-19 with a 6.00 ERA before being let go after the 2006 season.

After spending two years in the Nippon League in Japan, the Philadelphia Phillies took a chance on Vogelsong and signed him in 2010. Vogelsong’s time in Philadelphia was short, however, as he was released on July 15 the same year.

Then the circle of Vogelsong’s career was completed, as he signed a minor league contract with the Giants with an invitation to spring training in 2011.

Vogelsong was tasked with replacing the injured Barry Zito in the fifth starting rotation spot, and what a pleasant surprise he’s been for San Francisco.

In eight starts, Vogelsong is 4-1 with a 1.68 ERA. Opposing hitters are hitting just .214 against him, and he has 42 strikeouts compared with just 14 walks in 53.2 innings pitched.

Vogelsong has quickly become one of the most reliable starters on San Francisco’s elite pitching staff, which begs the questions: will he be named a National League All-Star?

The answer to that question will be found over Vogelsong’s next couple of starts. If he continues to dazzle, he may very well find himself in Arizona for the midsummer classic, especially since his skipper, Bruce Bochy, is going to be the manager for the National League.

Vogelsong is already making a case for the league’s Comeback Player of the Year, and being voted an All-Star certainly won’t hurt his chances.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

(Sports Network) – The Washington Nationals will try to string together back-
to-back road wins for the first time in a month when the team concludes a
three-game series with the defending world champion San Francisco Giants this
afternoon at AT&T Park.

Washington has been among the worst clubs in the majors away from home this
season, having produced a troubling 13-22 record as the visitor thus far.
Since earning consecutive victories at Atlanta’s Turner Field from May 10-11,
the Nats have dropped 11 of 15 contests on the road.

The Nationals have fared pretty well so far on a current 11-game, three-city
West Coast trip, however. Washington is 3-3 to date on the trek, which began
in Arizona last week, and has split the first two tilts of this set after
claiming a 2-1 win over the Giants last night.

Jordan Zimmermann was the x-factor for the Nationals on Thursday, as the young
hurler held San Francisco to one run and five hits over the first seven
innings and helped his cause with an RBI sacrifice bunt in the top of the
fourth.

“He has really stepped up,” Nationals bench coach John McLaren said of
Zimmermann. “I mean, his stuff is as good as anybody in the league. I hear
scouts say, ‘Oh my God, we’d like to get him,’ and I say, ‘Yeah, good luck.”

McLaren was acting as Washington’s manager for last night’s matchup with
regular skipper Jim Riggleman serving a one-game suspension as a result of
incidents of throwing at hitters between the Nationals and Diamondbacks on
Sunday. Washington pitcher Jason Marquis received a five-game ban for his
actions, but is presently appealing the ban.

Riggleman will be eligible to coach in this afternoon’s series finale.

The National League West-leading Giants, who mustered only five hits on the
night, had a two-game win streak halted and lost for only the second time in
their last seven tests.

San Francisco will try to rebound today behind Matt Cain, with the reliable
right-hander aiming to duplicate one of his best performances of the season.

Cain tossed seven outstanding innings against fellow NL West member Colorado
last Friday at AT&T Park, limiting the Rockies to just one run and four hits
while striking out seven to lead the Giants to a 3-1 victory. The effort
halted a personal two-start losing streak in which Cain was tagged for a total
of nine runs and 17 hits over a combined 12 innings of work.

The 2009 All-Star will also be attempting to avenge a tough loss to the
Nationals in Washington on May 1, when Cain was reached for three runs (two
earned) in six innings of a 5-2 San Francisco setback.

In 10 career starts against the Nationals, Cain is 4-4 with a 3.38 earned run
average.

Riggleman will hand the ball in the finale to rotation replacement Yunesky
Maya, who takes another stab at an elusive first win in the majors.

Maya is coming off a dull 4 1/3-inning stint at Arizona on Friday, with the
Cuban defector surrendering four runs and six hits while issuing three walks
and registering a loss. The verdict leaves him with an 0-4 record and a poor
6.43 ERA over seven career big league starts, five of which came near the end
of last season.

The 29-year-old right-hander has made two starts since being called up from
Triple A to fill in for the injured Tom Gorzelanny, having allowed four runs
in a 4 2/3-inning no-decision against San Diego on May 29. This will be Maya’s
first-ever encounter with the Giants.

Washington has won four of six games against San Francisco this season, but is
just 3-8 at AT&T Park since 2008.

The Freak. The Franchise. Big Time Timmy Jim.

Whatever you choose to call him, he has managed to become not only the face of the contemporary San Francisco Giants, but has etched his name in the history books, both with the Giants and Major League Baseball, in just his first five big league seasons.

Tim Lincecum is just shy of his 27th birthday, and already he has collected two National League Cy Young awards and a World Series ring.

Lincecum has led the National League in strikeouts in each of the last three seasons, and on June 6 recorded his 1,000th career strikeout, becoming the second fastest to reach that mark behind Kerry Wood, and just the eighth player to reach that number in his first five seasons.

The Giants ace has struck out opposing hitters at phenomenal rates, leading the National League in strikeouts per nine innings in each of the last three seasons, and averaging an astounding ten strikeouts per nine innings pitched over his entire career.

Lincecum is already a three-time National League All-Star and is likely to be appearing in his fourth All-Star game this July.

What Lincecum accomplished in the 2010 postseason was legendary. It began in his first career postseason start against the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of the National League Division Series, in which he pitched a complete game shutout with a franchise postseason record 14 strikeouts.

It ended with a ten-strikeout masterpiece in Game 5 of the World Series, when Lincecum recorded the win in the deciding contest, giving San Francisco its first world championship.

Number 55 is just entering his prime, and will in all likelihood be at the top of this list when all is said and done.
