–>

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) – The San Francisco Giants announced on
Tuesday that they have extended the contracts of both manager Bruce Bochy and
general manager Brian Sabean, keeping them with the team through the 2013
campaign with a club option for 2014.

Financial terms of the deals were not announced.

“Brian and Bruce are certainly two of the finest professionals at their
respective positions in all of baseball,” said Giants president and incoming
CEO Larry Baer in a statement. “They have effectively built and fostered a
winning tradition at all levels of our organization. I have no doubt that they
will achieve continued success for the Giants in the coming years and beyond.”

Bochy, who took over for Felipe Alou following the 2006 campaign, just
completed his 17th consecutive year as a major league manager. He currently
ranks third among active big league skippers for wins and is 27th on the all-
time list.

During his five-year tenure with the Giants, the team has posted a 409-401
(.505) record, including a World Series title in 2010. However, the Giants
missed the postseason this past year, finishing 86-76, eight games behind the
National League West champion Arizona Diamondbacks.

Prior to joining San Francisco, Bochy spent the previous 24 seasons in the San
Diego organization as a player, coach and manager. The former big league
catcher had success with the Padres, guiding the club to four division crowns
and a trip to the World Series in 1998.

As for Sabean, he just finished his 15th straight season with the Bay Area
team, making him not only the longest-serving GM in team history, but the
longest-tenured GM with the same organization in baseball.

With Sabean at the helm, the Giants have captured five postseason berths,
including two World Series appearances, culminating with the championship in
2010. In his 15 years the Giants have gone 1,298-1,130-1 (.534), while winning
four division titles, and were named the 2010 Baseball America Organization of
the Year.

Pill cleared the leftfield fence in his first at-bat at Petco Park to give the Giants a 2-0 lead and help move San Francisco to six games behind first-place Arizona in the National League West.

Carlos Beltran went 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Giants.

Eric Surkamp (1-0) prevailed in his second major league start, holding San Diego to three runs on five hits in five innings. Ramon Ramirez notched his fourth save.

Wade LeBlanc (2-5) took the loss. He allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings.

The fact that a trio of lefthanded hitters – Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez – did the majority of damage off the lefty Zito probably did little to change manager Charlie Manuel’s trade-deadline wish list, which starts with a righthanded bat he can insert into the middle of his batting order on those nights when the Phillies face a really tough lefty.

Zito, despite owning a Cy Young Award, no longer qualifies for that distinction, although his $18.5 million salary does make him the most overpaid pitcher in baseball.

John Mayberry, inserted into the starting lineup in place of Domonic Brown after Zito replaced Lincecum, continued to make his case for being the righthanded bat that Manuel wants by hitting a fourth-inning home run and a seventh-inning double. He has 14 RBIs this month. He had 26 RBIs for his career coming into the month.

Mayberry, of course, would be the cheapest option and you could make a case that he would also be the best one.

Perhaps more than anything, the Giants’ return to Citizens Bank Park for the first time since they held a champagne celebration in the visiting clubhouse last October offered a reminder that the blockbuster deals at the trade deadline are not always the ones that make a difference.

A year ago around this time, the Giants were in second place in the National League West, well within striking distance of the San Diego Padres. The rumor mill had them in pursuit of Toronto’s Juan Bautista and Washington’s Adam Dunn. They got neither.

Forget about calling it the bullpen. Giants relievers hang out at the K Corral.

They combined for 13 strikeouts over eight scoreless innings and kept the San Diego Padres at bay long enough to pull out a 6-5, 14-inning victory at AT&T Park on Wednesday.

Nate Schierholtz won it with his second home run of the game, a high fly ball that barely reached the top of the brick wall in right field leading off the bottom of the 14th. Padres reliever Pat Neshek walked off the mound shaking his head in disbelief.

It was the Giants’ 10th walk-off victory this season and the first career multi-homer game for Schierholtz.

He got the hero’s welcome, with players mobbing him at home plate. But it was the Giants relievers who cleared his path.

“They won the game for us,” manager Bruce Bochy said after the 3-hour, 52-minute epic. “They gave us a chance when we were down, and then they held it there.”

The Giants improved to 8-5 in extra innings. Despite their season-long offensive woes, they moved to two games ahead of Arizona in the National League West.

San Diego, meanwhile, mounted nothing but a steady breeze against the Giants bullpen. Brian Wilson and Sergio Romo, for example, combined to strike out seven of the 14 batters they faced.

In all, the Giants tied the ballpark record for K’s. That’s 19 strikeouts — and one walk-off.

“That home run could not have come at a better time,” Bochy said. “That was a hard-fought

game.”

It was the last of several well-timed hits for the Giants. They tied it at 5-5 in the eighth when their hottest hitter came up at the right time. Pablo Sandoval blasted a two-run double, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 17 games.

Hitting left-handed against right-handed reliever Mike Adams, Sandoval smoked a ball deep into the right-center alley to drive home Andres Torres from third and Brandon Crawford from first.

As Sandoval pulled into second base, he spread out his arms wide, like an eagle, then clapped his hands in triumph.

Sandoval deserved credit for a save in the top of the ninth when the Padres threatened against Wilson. San Diego had runners at the corners and one out. Wilson took care of Chase Headley on his own, getting a fastball for a swinging strike three, but Ryan Ludwick lashed a ball down the third-base line.

Sandoval dived to his right to snare Ludwick’s hot shot, then threw across the diamond for the final out of the inning.

The late flurry of action, predictably, took place too late to do any good for Madison Bumgarner. The Giants made it an astounding 18th consecutive game at AT&T Park without scoring more than three runs with Bumgarner on the mound.

Bumgarner gave up five runs in six innings — but he knew he had to be better. This was a matchup between a pair of starters with the National League’s worst run support. Dustin Moseley was getting 2.21 runs per nine innings from the Padres while in games; Bumgarner was getting 2.74.

But it would be untrue to say Bumgarner got no support Wednesday. Andres Torres helped him with a sensational play to rob Jesus Guzman of extra bases in the top of the sixth. Guzman blasted a ball toward the 399-foot mark in center field. Torres sprinted with his back to the plate, turned to find the ball slicing behind him and caught it with an outstretched glove.

Torres also finished 3 for 6 with two doubles and two runs. His big game came a night after being irritated by Padres reliever Chad Qualls, who spiked the ball after tagging him out.

“I’ve said it before: Sometimes it’s good to play angry,” Bochy said. “Sometimes that’s a good thing. He felt like (last night) was personal. What was important is that he handled it.”

Symbolically, Tim Lincecum walked to the mound against Cincinnati on Saturday as the Giants' last line of defense against the forces of panic and despair.

Symbolically, Tim Lincecum walked to the mound against Cincinnati on Saturday as the Giants’ last line of defense against the forces of panic and despair.

It’s not quite fair to pile all that responsibility upon anybody’s shoulders in any single game in June, but there it was.

Freddy Sanchez had just gone down to a serious shoulder injury. Buster Posey has been down and out for a few weeks, of course.

The season is still young, and the Giants are still clinging to first place in the National League West.

But if the Giants were going to have a chance to feel halfway good about themselves this weekend, Lincecum was the one who had to start the party music.

And it did not happen.

Instead, after the Reds’ 10-2 victory at AT&T Park, there was mostly thick silence in the Giants’ clubhouse.

“It’s not about carrying the team, it’s just being a large aspect of it, and doing your job,” Lincecum said after giving up seven earned runs in four-plus innings, one of the worst outings of his glorious career.

“And I didn’t do mine today.”

What happens to the defending World Series champions if they can’t hit, if they don’t have Posey, and if Lincecum isn’t on top of his game?

We saw it Saturday — the sense of anxiety was a tangible presence amid the murmuring and the head-scratching in the stands.

Lincecum has done so much for this franchise, when he doesn’t deliver, the air gets mighty arid.

“I

know it looked bad today,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “We were off. Had a horrible game. This doesn’t happen very often. It just so happens it comes right after Freddy’s injury. These guys don’t make excuses.

“These guys, they’re not making excuses. “… It’s up to us to keep fighting. And these guys will.”

Usually, the charge starts with Lincecum, of course.

But this was the fourth consecutive — and easily the worst — sluggish outing for the two-time Cy Young winner, all dating to May 21, when Lincecum shut out the A’s.

In that game, Lincecum threw a season-high 133 pitches; that also was his last start before the Giants lost Posey, Lincecum’s trusted catcher, to a devastating ankle injury in late May.

In his four starts since, Lincecum has a 7.66 ERA, and his season ERA has gone from 2.06 to his current 3.41.

Lincecum had a similarly wobbly period last August, when he acknowledged some adjustment issues going from Bengie Molina to Posey behind the plate.

By last September, though, Lincecum was in lock step with Posey and was nearly perfect through the fall.

Right now, Lincecum is about as far from his September-October dominance as he can get.

“I still feel strong,” Lincecum said. “I don’t feel unhealthy. I don’t feel like anything’s bothering me. It’s just simply getting back to being me. Just driving to the plate, using the mechanics, keeping my rhythm.

“Kind of dumbifying myself, I guess you could say “… keeping it simple.”

Lincecum was all over the place from the outset, and the Reds were disciplined enough to make him pay; he threw 73 total pitches, only 36 for strikes.

He recorded only one strikeout, which, remarkably, is the lowest total of his career. In 136 previous outings (135 as a starter) — Lincecum had never recorded fewer than two strikeouts and had averaged 7.4 strikeouts per appearance.

That 133-pitch outing, in retrospect, sticks out like a sore statistical thumb.

“I don’t feel like it’s fatigue,” Lincecum said when asked about the effects of the May 21 game. “I don’t feel like I’m getting tired. I don’t feel like anything’s broken. I just feel like it’s a matter of just getting back to being me.”

That, perhaps, could suggest Lincecum has been thinking a little more on the mound now that he’s throwing to Eli Whiteside, not Posey.

In the third inning, there might have been a sign of some disconnect — with a runner on third, Lincecum threw a darting off-speed pitch that hit the dirt but looked stoppable.

Whiteside missed the ball, it skipped to the backstop, Brandon Phillips scored, putting the Reds up 3-0 and putting a scowl on Lincecum’s face.

Has the catcher change affected Lincecum at all?

“Not really,” Lincecum said. “Not at all. I mean, when you go out there, whether it’s with Whitey or (Chris) Stewart, you have to go out there and make pitches.”

Bochy said he continues to have the utmost confidence in Whiteside but added that he might get Stewart in there with Lincecum if the schedule works out right.

You count up all of the Giants’ woes, and you do have to ask: How much has to go wrong for them to be knocked out of first place?

At some point, it probably will come down to Lincecum, the Giants’ other key pitchers, and the refortifying of their last line of defense.

The Giants may not have had the best defense range-wise in 2010, but they were able to make the plays on everything they got to.

The Giants defense is subpar in 2011, but most of their errors came early on. The Giants are currently 13th-worst in the National League in errors with 40 and 12th in the league in fielding percentage at .983.

According to Baseball-Reference, as a team, San Francisco’s Rtot (the number of runs above or below average the player was worth based on the number of plays made) is minus-three, so their defense has slightly cost them a few runs.

One glaring defensive question mark is Miguel Tejada. As a shortstop this season, Tejada has made six errors and has a .942 fielding percentage in 27 games—with an Rtot of minus-three.

The Giants have made the most of Tejada by placing him at third base while Pablo Sandoval is recovering from his injury. Tejada has responded nicely by making just one error in 27 games, with an Rtot of four and a .988 fielding percentage.

If the Giants want to repeat as champions in 2011, they will have to continue doing something they excelled at last season—catching the ball.

The Freak. The Franchise. Big Time Timmy Jim.

Whatever you choose to call him, he has managed to become not only the face of the contemporary San Francisco Giants, but has etched his name in the history books, both with the Giants and Major League Baseball, in just his first five big league seasons.

Tim Lincecum is just shy of his 27th birthday, and already he has collected two National League Cy Young awards and a World Series ring.

Lincecum has led the National League in strikeouts in each of the last three seasons, and on June 6 recorded his 1,000th career strikeout, becoming the second fastest to reach that mark behind Kerry Wood, and just the eighth player to reach that number in his first five seasons.

The Giants ace has struck out opposing hitters at phenomenal rates, leading the National League in strikeouts per nine innings in each of the last three seasons, and averaging an astounding ten strikeouts per nine innings pitched over his entire career.

Lincecum is already a three-time National League All-Star and is likely to be appearing in his fourth All-Star game this July.

What Lincecum accomplished in the 2010 postseason was legendary. It began in his first career postseason start against the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of the National League Division Series, in which he pitched a complete game shutout with a franchise postseason record 14 strikeouts.

It ended with a ten-strikeout masterpiece in Game 5 of the World Series, when Lincecum recorded the win in the deciding contest, giving San Francisco its first world championship.

Number 55 is just entering his prime, and will in all likelihood be at the top of this list when all is said and done.

Buster Posey was an irreplaceable part of the Giants.

Buster Posey was an irreplaceable part of the Giants.

It’s rare to find a backstop with his professionalism and natural talent and it will be impossible to truly replace his presence both behind and at the plate during his at-bats.

The fact that he is currently leading the National League in all-star votes is just another reason for Giants fans to grieve.

However, the detrimental loss of Buster Posey should not mean a death sentence to San Francisco.

For now, Eli Whiteside is holding his own but management has been rumored to be talking to Ivan Rodriguez. Bengie Molina has been mentioned too, but it’s hard to see how he would really be a good addition to the team. Regardless, the catcher position will be sorted out, and if the Giants can get going offensively, they will be okay.

Another thing to remember is that, in spite of all the injuries and close losses we may have ingrained in our brains, the Giants are still only half a game out of first place in the NL West.

Rankings may change throughout the season but the Giants and Diamondbacks are out in front of the division.

With the Dodgers and intimidating Rockies 4.5 games back, San Francisco has been able to hold its own in spite of constant hurdles and hoops so far this season.

It’s going to be a long four months until October baseball and it’s hard to tell who will be a part of it right now.

However, if the Giants are able to make a few changes and stay calm, they’ve got a good chance of bringing a second parade to the City by the Bay.

What are your opinions.

San Francisco Giants’ Andres Torres (56) watches his grand slam, as St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina watcvhes, in the fourth inning of a baseball game, Monday, May 30, 2011 in St. Louis.

(05-30) 04:00 PDT ST. LOUIS —

- Madison Bumgarner won his second straight after losing his first six decisions and Andres Torres gave the National League’s worst offense a big boost with his first career grand slam in the San Francisco Giants’ 7-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.

Kyle McClellan (6-2) was knocked out after four innings in the worst outing of his first season in the Cardinals’ rotation, missing a chance to tie for the major league victory lead. Albert Pujols hit his ninth homer and Allen Craig doubled twice with an RBI.

Cody Ross also homered for the Giants, who are last in the National League in runs even after this outburst and had been shut out twice the previous four games. Bumgarner, 4 for 19 at the plate, doubled and scored on Miguel Tejada’s hit in the third, then walked on a full count ahead of Torres’ second homer of the season in a five-run fourth.

Bumgarner (2-6) scattered six hits in seven innings and struggled only in the third when he gave up three straight hits and both runs. It’s his seventh straight outing of six or more innings with three or fewer runs allowed, with a 2.12 ERA during that stretch.

Torres, the Giants’ leadoff man, doubled his season RBI total when he drove an 0-1 pitch over the right field wall in the fourth and also doubled. San Francisco won easily despite going 1 for 18 after the grand slam and leaving the bases loaded in the fifth after three straight walks from Miguel Batista.

Matt Holliday singled in four trips after missing six starts with a quadriceps injury and is hitting .344, tied for the National League lead with teammate Lance Berkman, who was 0 for 4.

The Cardinals dropped to 9-2 in starts by McClellan, who has yielded a team-high nine homers. McClellan was behind in the count to eight of the first 10 hitters and both of his walks came in the Giants’ five-run fourth that made it 7-2.

Aaron Rowand bruised his right hip when he was struck by the ball diving into second base on a pickoff attempt in the fifth and was taken out in the bottom of the inning.

Pujols hit his 99th career homer at 6-year-old Busch Stadium off Ramon Ramirez in the eighth and had an RBI single in the third for his second multi-RBI game in the last four. Only seven players have 100 or more homers in their current stadium.

Notes: Ross’ homer ended an 0-for-14 slump. … Attendance of 40,849 was the Cardinals’ second shutout of the season. … Ryan Theriot doubled in the third and has a 13-game hitting streak, tied for the longest active streak in the NL with the Giants’ Buster Posey, out for the season with a broken ankle. … McClellan allowed nine homers in 75 1-3 innings as a setup man last year, and has allowed nine in 67 2-3 innings this year.

The Florida Marlins are a team with fantastic pitching, with Josh Johnson, Anibal Sanchez, Chris Volstad and Ricky Nolasco anchoring a rotation that is quickly becoming one of the elite staffs in the National League.

The Marlins could also use some help in the outfield. The average experience in the big leagues for the four outfielders on the team is just two seasons. And apart from right fielder Mike Stanton, there isn’t much offensive contribution from Florida’s outfielders.

Hmm. Great pitching.

A star shortstop in Hanley Ramirez.

And a need for an outfielder with experience who can hit a little bit.

Sounds like a match made in heaven: Florida Marlins, meet the San Francisco Giants, who have more talented outfielders than they know what to do with and a need for a shortstop.

Of course no one is under any illusions that San Francisco could get Hanley Ramirez, but they certainly might be able to acquire the man who plays second base for the fish, former shortstop Omar Infante.

Infante had a breakout season in 2010 with the Atlanta Braves. He hit .321 for the Braves and helped lead them to the postseason, where they were defeated by the Giants in the NLDS.

In addition to his offensive potential, he would be a good defensive addition as well, providing more range at shortstop than Miguel Tejada.

Burrell making best of his time on bench

Pat Burrell provided one of the more heartwarming stories of the offseason, when his love of being a Giant was so great that he practically signed a blank contract with no guarantee of playing time.

The reality of being glued to the bench is much different, though. Burrell has started just five of the past 14 games. Is he pining to get off the pine?

“It’s been all right. I signed up for it,” he said. “There was no guarantee for me last year, either. And really, there shouldn’t be for anyone on any team. If you play well, you’re going to play. If not, you more than likely won’t.”

Burrell entered Wednesday with a .233 average and 39 strikeouts in 116 at-bats, although his .346 on-base percentage was more respectable. He also was 0 for 6 as a pinch hitter but drew an important walk in the ninth to load the bases and sustain a rally Tuesday night.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Burrell stopped by his office Tuesday afternoon to remind Bochy that he was a .375 hitter against Florida Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco. But that’s as far as Burrell will take his lobbying efforts.

“He’s been one of the best I’ve seen, considering his track record in this league,” Bochy said. “He’s such a great teammate. When he’s not in there, he’s in the dugout pulling for guys and helping them. He’s understanding of our situation, and he stays ready.”

During last year’s

run to the World Series, Burrell helped to keep the clubhouse from tensing up. He is preaching calm now, even though the club has scored the fewest runs in the National League.

“Last year at this time, I was just getting here,” said Burrell, who was released by the Tampa Bay Rays before signing a minor league deal with the Giants last season. “From everything I hear, it was pretty similar. We’ll find our stride.”

Outfielder Darren Ford is probably headed for the disabled list after an MRI exam showed a lateral sprain of his left ankle — a debilitating injury for a pinch-running specialist.

Bochy termed rookie Brandon Belt a “long shot” to replace Ford, saying the club will seek more of a pinch hitter. There is some support to bring back Travis Ishikawa as a backup first baseman and left-handed bat, although outfielder Tyler Graham has 20 stolen bases for Triple-A Fresno. The Giants could free up a 40-man roster spot for either player by placing Mark DeRosa on the 60-day disabled list.

Tim Lincecum fired a three-hit shutout and retired 21 consecutive batters through the middle of the game Saturday as the Giants beat the A’s 3-0 at AT&T Park.

The Giants’ ace surrendered a single to Ryan Sweeney between first and second base in the opening inning, then didn’t allow another base runner until Landon Powell stroked a two-out single to right in the eighth.

Lincecum (4-4) continued his career mastery of the A’s, striking out six while not walking a batter. He is now 5-0 against them in six career starts with three complete games and a 1.17 ERA.

The Giants provided the only run Lincecum needed in the bottom of the first inning. Andres Torres opened the frame with a walk and went to third on Freddy Sanchez’s double to right-center. Buster Posey’s groundout to second scored Torres.

The Giants added two insurances run for Lincecum, who threw a season-high 133 pitches, in the bottom of the eighth. Posey, who had two hits and extended his hitting streak to 10 games, singled to open the inning against Oakland’s fourth pitcher, Brad Ziegler. He moved to second on a Pat Burrell groundout and scored on Cody Ross’ sharp single to left. Aubrey Huff’s single to right moved Ross to third, and Miguel Tejada’s sacrifice fly to center brought him home.

A’s starter Brett Anderson (2-4) was the tough-luck loser. He gave up a lone run on five hits and a walk over the first five innings and struck out five.

The most momentous

event for Oakland came in the sixth inning, when right-handed reliever Joey Devine, recalled from Triple-A on Friday, made his first major league appearance since Sept. 28, 2008, after a long recovery from Tommy John elbow surgery. Devine pitched a scoreless inning in the A’s fourth straight defeat.

The Giants, who widened their lead in the National League West to 21/2 games over second-place Colorado, have won eight straight games at AT&T Park and have also beaten Oakland eight straight in their home park dating back to 2009.
