Posey making progress, walks without crutches

It was a busy day for Buster Posey. He spent his Saturday morning speaking to a couple of thousand fans at AT&T Park and reached another milestone in his recovery from ankle surgery, taking his first steps without crutches.

“I took a couple of laps around the weight room,” Posey said. “Everything felt great. … Hopefully, within 2-3 days, I can completely ditch this thing (his one crutch) and just wear the boot.”

Posey said he has been bearing weight on his ankle for the past 10 days or so while wearing the walking boot. He said he hopes to catch some bullpen sessions and hit off a tee before the season ends.

“It’s all dependent on how much progress we make in the next month or so,” Posey said.

Posey also hopes to start working on strengthening his legs, which he hasn’t been able to do since his home-plate collision with Florida’s Scott Cousins on May 25.

“Our trainers have a plan, and I think it’s important not to deviate from that,” Posey said. “Could I probably push some things harder than I should? Yeah, but I think we risk some setbacks. I want this thing to be good as new when I’m finally able to use it again.”

Manager Bruce Bochy said he expects fines or suspensions from Friday night’s brawl with the Phillies to be announced Monday, possibly sooner. The one player he frets about possibly getting a suspension is catcher Eli Whiteside.

“He’s in a hard spot,” Bochy said. “He got all kinds of sides to cover there. He’s trying to protect the pitcher. If anybody knows Whitey, he’s not a fighter. But he’s going to protect the pitchers. He saw a player (Placido Polanco) come from the side and went at his feet. But it wasn’t like he was throwing punches or anything.”

Reliever Ramon Ramirez, who hit Shane Victorino with a pitch and was ejected along with Whiteside and Victorino, was not available for comment Friday night or Saturday.

Victorino told The Philadelphia Inquirer he expects to be suspended. Victorino tackled Giants hitting coach Hensley Meulens and tried to push umpire Mike Muchlinski out of his way several times.

“I had no intentions of going out there and charging the mound,” Victorino told the Inquirer. “I did step forward, and Eli, from looking at his reaction, thought I was going to go. Then Polanco came in, and (Whiteside) tackled Polanco. Everything escalated from there.”

–CARL STEWARD

That’s all the news for today.

Well, the San Francisco Giants’ bid to go undefeated in the second half of the season was spoiled Saturday night against the San Diego Padres, but can still secure a series victory this afternoon with Matt Cain on the mound to take on every Giants fan’s favorite Padre, Mat Latos.

Cain (8-5 3.06 ERA) is looking to maintain his All-Star form with his first start of the second half, while Latos (5-10 4.04 ERA) has been showing flashes of brilliance, only to be left out in the cold by his Padres’ struggling offense more often than not.

As for the lineup right fielder Nate Schierholtz’s eight game hitting streak ending on Saturday, but he will be batting clean up once again for the Black and Orange. Andres Torres and Mike Fontenot return to the top of the batting order, Miguel Tejada will be back at shortstop, and Eli Whiteside will be behind the dish to catch Cain today.

Your San Francisco Giants:

1. Andres Torres (S) CF
2. Mike Fontenot 2B
3. Pablo Sandoval 3B
4. Nate Schierholtz RF
5. Aubrey Huff 1B
6. Cody Ross LF
7. Miguel Tejada SS
8. Eli Whiteside C
9. Matt Cain P

San Diego Padres Lineup:

1. Will Venable RF
2. Everth Cabrera SS
3. Cameron Maybin CF
4. Ryan Ludwick LF
5. Orlando Hudson 2B
6. Kyle Phillips C
7. Anthony Rizzo 1B
8. Alberto Gonzalez 3B
9. Mat Latos P

In other news Giants utility man Mark DeRosa has begun rehab assignment for single A San Jose, going 1-2 with a double, a walk, and a run scored. He’ll play one more with them before he moves over to triple A Fresno on Tuesday.

The Giants used an interesting lineup on Saturday once the blow out was all but finished with newly acquired Hector Sanchez behind the plate and catcher Chris Stewart over at first base. Although it’s a lineup I doubt they would use regularly, it’s good to know they can have a bit more depth with Sanchez on the team.

And as for another Sanchez, Jonathan Sanchez, he’ll join DeRosa in San Jose Sunday night as he’s scheduled to make his first rehab assignment start. If all goes well he’ll throw again from them on Friday.

First pitch is set for 1:05 pm PT this afternoon with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.

What are your opinions.

The injury bug continues to bite the Giants. After Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Colorado, the Giants announced rookie first baseman Brandon Belt has a small fracture in his left wrist and was being placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 1.

Belt, who was hit on the wrist by St. Louis pitcher Trevor Miller on Tuesday, had missed four games. He appeared to be making significant progress, but an MRI taken on the wrist Saturday morning revealed the fracture.

“It’s not that bad,” Belt said. “It’s just a hairline fracture, a little bit chipped off just a tad.”

Belt was surprised by the news considering how quickly he seemed to be improving.

“I didn’t expect it to get well in a few days, but it did,” he said. “It took huge leaps and bounds from Day One, so I didn’t think anything of it. I just figured in the next few days, I’d be all right, ready to go. But they found that break in there, so it’ll be a little more time than we thought.”

The Giants called up infielder Conor Gillaspie from Triple-A Fresno to replace Belt on the roster.

Belt said he’s been told it’ll take the bone in his wrist a month to fully heal.

“I’ll be able to get back in there as soon as I can get a bat in my hand and swing it full speed, so I don’t expect it to take a month,” he said. “Hopefully, a week or two at the most. I just want to make sure I give it the proper rest it needs to make sure it heals properly, so when I do start playing

again, it’s not acting up throughout the whole season.”

Pablo Sandoval was less than enthusiastic about his 0-for-3 performance in Friday night’s rehab start at Class A, other than coming out of it pain-free.

“My timing was way off after not playing for a month,” Sandoval said. “I didn’t feel comfortable at the plate. It’s going to take a little time, but maybe not too long.”

Apprised that Sandoval was the only player in the lineup who didn’t get a hit, manager Bruce Bochy was amused.

“He’s killin’ them,” Bochy said. “He may not crack the lineup tonight.”

To wit, Sandoval was scheduled to play again in San Jose again Saturday night, but was the game was canceled because of rain. Instead, Sandoval will play the first game of a doubleheader today at Triple-A Fresno.

Interesting leftover from Friday night’s game: Pleasanton’s Brandon Crawford didn’t field a single play in his AT&T Park debut. But his mother, Lynn, did — she caught a foul ball in the stands.

What do you guys think about this.
