SAN FRANCISCO, April 14 (UPI) — San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson may need season-ending surgery after the team announced Saturday he has elbow problems.

Wilson has “structural issues” in his throwing elbow, Manager Bruce Bochy told reporters, adding Wilson would be seeking a second opinion from an orthopedist after the magnetic resonance imaging diagnosis.

If the initial assessment is confirmed, it will likely require season-ending Tommy John surgery — the second of Wilson’s career.

The 30-year-old reliever also underwent ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction in 2003 while at Louisiana State.

Wilson set a Giants’ club record with 48 saves as San Francisco claimed a World Series championship in 2010.

He has recorded 171 saves and a 3.21 earned run average in 315 appearances in his seven seasons with the team.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

Texas Rangers Down San Francisco Giants in Spring…

It was a classic battle. The Texas Rangers had Alexi Ogando on the mound facing the Giants’ Madison Bumgarner. For Texas fans it was a rematch and time to get revenge for the 2010 World Series. Texas won the game 4-1 and fans in Texas rejoiced.

But it was just a spring training game. However, unlike other games, it featured both teams utilizing their offensive starters for the majority of the game. So what did I see that I liked?

It started with Alexi Ogando who showed that, while he is an invaluable piece of the bullpen, he continued to prove his worth as a pitcher who could come in and contribute in a spot start when needed.

I was also impressed with Mitch Moreland who continues to show the patience at the plate that any little leaguer should study. His at-bats are a thing of beauty to me.

The game wasn’t without its faults though as Josh Hamilton had two chances at big plays. He had a chance to score the first run of the game early on but instead of running home on an infield hit he was caught at third base and later in the game he allowed a double a double on a hit that he would’ve normally dove for during the regular season. Once again, though, this is still spring training and there’s no reason to be overly aggressive unless you’re trying to make the team.

In relief Mike Adams seemed to find his groove again. Robbie Ross continued to impress me. I’m still not sold on Neal Cotts as a lefty in the bullpen. And I don’t see Mark Hamburger making the roster.

Last season I turned to Twitter and featured the opinions of fellow Rangers’ fan Mike McGehee (@SDIMikeMcgehee) and I thought I’d bring his “two cents” back again this year. When I asked Mike his thoughts on tonight’s game he responded by saying “In a game under the lights the standout for me was Robbie Ross. The electrifying lefty continues to make his case for the big leagues. While the club would like to develop him as a starter it would be hard to keep the youngster off the roster if he continues to light up big league hitters.”

And I agree. The Rangers lost Darren Oliver in the offseason to free agency and never re-signed Michael Gonzalez. If there are two guys on the staff who could replace them, in my mind, it would be Ross and Mitch Stetter.

Opening day is less than two weeks away and I cannot wait. And I’m confident that positions will be filled as needed and everything will work out just fine.

Until next time, I’ll see you in the cheap seats!

San Francisco Giants' Ryan Vogelsong, Freddy…

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The latest rehab steps by Ryan Vogelsong and Freddy Sanchez likely won’t keep the veterans off the disabled list.

Manager Bruce Bochy on Friday said Vogelsong’s season debut is tentatively scheduled for April 15, meaning the right-hander would skip a start while working his way back from a strained back suffered just before camp started.

Asked if Sanchez (shoulder) was also likely to start the season on the D.L., Bochy said of his second baseman: “I think that’s fair to say. There’s nothing official yet, but we’re at the stage where that’s a strong possibility.

“With Vogelsong, there’s nothing definite there, either.”

Vogelsong made his first rehab appearance of the spring

Friday in a minor league game. Afterward, he expressed disappointment at being allowed to throw only 24 pitches.

“I threw one inning, and I’m not tired — it’s hard to be done,” Vogelsong said. “I understand it. I just do what I’m told. I feel like I’m capable (of more).”

Vogelsong faced six hitters. He gave up three hits and a walk and struck out one.

“The ball was moving well,” he said. “The balls that got hit were pretty darn good pitches, to be honest with you. Everything feels good. You get this out of the way and move on to the next one.”

Vogelsong is scheduled to throw 40 pitches Monday. Bochy has said the Giants need to see Vogelsong throw five innings or 70 pitches by the end of the spring in order to clear

him for a regular-season start, but with two weeks until opening day, they’re running out of time.

Vogelsong has faced hitters just three times — twice in live batting practice and once in the minors — and has yet to swing a bat.

“We’re being cautious, and he knows that,” Bochy said. “He’s on his way, but we’ll take it slow with him.”

If Vogelsong debuts April 15, he would be slotted into the No. 5 spot in the rotation. The Giants don’t need to replace him because they have

an off day on the fifth day of the season.

Bochy said the Giants are leaning toward splitting up the left-handers; Madison Bumgarner would be the No. 2 starter and right-hander Matt Cain would pitch ahead of Barry Zito.

Tim Lincecum already has been named the opening day starter, but the Giants still don’t know who will run out to second base that day.

Sanchez will make his fielding debut in a minor league game this weekend, but he still hasn’t let it rip on throws to first base.

Bochy said Sanchez, who had shoulder surgery in August to repair his labrum and rotator cuff, is fine on normal throws to first base. On throws that are more difficult, “We tell him not to throw,” Bochy said.

  • There was some good

news on the injury front: Closer Brian Wilson (elbow) is scheduled to throw an inning in a minor league game Saturday, which would be the first time this spring Wilson has thrown twice in three days. If all goes well, Wilson will make another appearance Monday.

  • Buster Posey is scheduled to start at first base Saturday for the first time. It would also mark the first time since ankle surgery that Posey plays the field on back-to-back days.

“We’ll start ramping it up,” Bochy said.

In a 4-1 loss to the Texas Rangers, Posey got his first test at home plate since last year’s collision with Scott Cousins. Mitch Moreland came barreling home on Elvis Andrus’ single to center, and Posey stood well in front of the plate and

attempted a swipe tag as Moreland slid safely into home.

Posey brushed off the significance of the moment, but his pitcher didn’t.

“Oh yeah, yeah — definitely I was thinking about it the whole time,” Bumgarner said. “I didn’t think it would be that close. It was in the back of my mind for sure.”

  • Aubrey Huff started in left field Friday night and is penciled in as the left fielder for one of Saturday’s split-squad games. “I don’t want to leave camp without him getting some action out there,” Bochy said.
  • Reliever Dan Runzler is back to throwing off flat ground. Runzler had been sidelined with an injured muscle in his upper back.
